Paul McCartney performed at the Palacio de los Deportes in Madrid, Spain, on 2 November 1989.
It was the 22nd date of the Paul McCartney World Tour, which lasted for 102 dates across 14 countries between September 1989 and July 1990, and the first of two consecutive nights in Madrid.
The performance of ‘Things We Said Today’ from this show appears on the 1990 live album Tripping The Live Fantastic.
I always like Latin countries and Spain is special because it’s the land of the guitar. I like the language too, did it at school from the age of 11 which was a bit unusual then. As a kid I had this mate whose dad was the harbour master on the Herculaneum dock I always loved that name — in Liverpool and he asked me to go and stay the night. It was one of the first stay-overs I had.I remember the following morning, the boiled egg, after a good kip, it was exciting, I loved it. We went along the docks and had a good play on this massive mound of tyres. Then we came to this Spanish boat and we’d both done about a year of Spanish by then so it was, Buenas dias, senor, and they said, Si, blablabla, and we were, Non rapidamente, por favor. But we managed a bit of a chat.
