The Beatles recorded a version of ‘Take Good Care Of My Baby’ during their audition for Decca Records on 1 January 1962, with George Harrison on lead vocals.
‘Take Good Care Of My Baby’ was written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin, and was made famous by the singer Bobby Vee. It was released as a single by Vee in 1961, with ‘Bashful Bob’ as its b-side.
Vee’s version reached number one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 in September 1961. It also appeared on his album of the same name. Vee re-recorded the song in 1973 under his real name, Robert Thomas Velline.
Other versions of ‘Take Good Care Of My Baby’ were recorded by Dion, Gary Lewis & The Playboys, Smokie, and Bobby Vinton.
Only five of the 15 songs from The Beatles’ Decca audition were released on the Anthology 1 album, although versions of seven other songs performed that day have also been officially released. Three songs from that day, however, have yet to be released in any form: ‘Take Good Care Of My Baby’, ‘Love Of The Loved’, and ‘September In The Rain’.
Lyrics
My tears are falling
’cause you’ve taken her away
And though it really hurts me so
There something that I got to say
Take good care of my baby
Please don’t ever make her blue
Just tell her that you love her
Make sure you’re thinking of her
In everything you say and do
Take good care of my baby
Now don’t you ever make her cry
Just let your love surround her
Paint rainbow all around her
Don’t let her see the cloudy sky
Once upon a time
That little girl was mine
If I had been true
I know she’d never be with you
So take good care of my baby
Be just as kind as you can be
And if you should discover
That you don’t really love her
Just send my baby back home to me
Take good care of my baby
Be just as kind as you can be
And if you should discover
That you don’t really love her
Just send my baby back home to me
Take good care of my baby
Take good care of my baby
Take good care of my baby
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Can’t believe the modern generation doesn’t know who Dion is!
Fantastic lead vocal by George !!!
it is. and I like the production .lots of reverb.
Can you guys hear John? I cant I can only hear Paul’s harmony
I isolated vocals, i only hear Paul harmonizing the “Take good care of my baby” and the outro along with George. John is probably not singing
It does not sound like george , we all know his voice on other early songs, Brian Poole was there same day, and others, did someone stand in, as a singer…same as someone did for ringo at love me do sessions….
Of course It is George on lead vocals . And his lead guitar is special , with a sophisticated modulation in the solo .
