A few years ago, when Get Back started streaming, someone asked me whether I knew what this instrument is that Kevin Harrington is working on in this photo. I searched around, and there seemed to be tentative agreement that it might be South Asian, belong to Harrison, and maybe is a drone instrument of some kind. It seems to hint at both percussion and a lyre in the way it’s designed, and looks as if it has tuning machine heads.
I guess here is a place where the assembled knowledge and wisdom might be equal to the task: What is the instrument, how is it played, and what does it sound like?
