I get livid when auto-tune “pop stars” are compared to The Beatles because of record sales….especially if it’s one of those pre-packaged make-up models with a uni-name. I need not leave a list here, need I?

Thing is, now they count things like streaming and You Tube views in there. Back then it MEANT something because it truly was sales. You couldn’t get your music any other way than going out to the record store and actually buying that LP or single. And a band / artist actually had to have some modicum of talent. There wasn’t any of this not worrying if you can actually sing or not, it can be “fixed” in the studio, because it’s all about image not talent. Not to say there isn’t talent out there now, there sure is, though you have to look for it.
But like SS said, the times, they are a-changin’, and it’s a different world now.

I get it worse– I get it as ‘When you can’t think of any one song on an album without automatically running through all the others on the album’ and ‘when you can recite track-listings like poetry’. Not to brag, of course

Back in the day some artists didn’t have to have talent, they just needed the right look.
There was also a group called Milli Vanilli in 1989 who famously mimed to the records, not being the vocalists
Milli Vanilli became one of the most popular pop acts in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Their success quickly turned to infamy when Morvan, Pilatus and their agent Sergio Vendero confessed that Morvan and Pilatus did not actually sing any of the vocals heard on the record. The pair decided to return the Grammy awards and asked they be given to the real vocalists. The group recorded a comeback album in 1998, but Rob Pilatus died before the album was released.
Well worth reading the complete entry on wiki.
And here is the better of their songs. Thats not saying much but the song was huge.

Well aware of Milli Vanilli. Thing is, they COULD sing, but weren’t allowed to, they looked like models and fit the mold of what the producers wanted to sell. They tried to release an album of their own, with THEM singing, post “Lip Synch-gate” but it was over for them. I guess you’re right, there was still some of that going on… I was talking more about the Beatles’ era.

You need a new pair of glasses, see a John Lennon -style frame, and don’t even look at the other ones…. (the lenses are actually round, though they look oval in this picture…

Not only that, but when they talk about record sales for an artist being more than the Beatles. It’s not because they’re more popular than the Beatles, it’s because due to the interwebs invention their music is more widely avaliable than the Beatles’ music was when they released it.

My wife laughs at me when I start singing the next song before it even starts.

It counts. I do stuff like that all the time. The other night, I had a blues musician sign my shoulder only because people at Macca shows have him do the same thing. What the Hell is wrong with me?**
**I’m a hardcore Beatles fan. If that’s wrong, I don’t want to be right.

My iPod overflows with Maxwell’s Silver Hammer . I haven’t counted, but its gotta be well in the thirties from both LIB and Abbey Road sessions.
