In fact that Polaroid was taken by Yoko. Both front and back. And John took the Polaroids of Yoko’s FLY. It’s on the Imagine Deluxe book.

Glad to see there have been so many fair and reasonable takes on Yoko. My opinion is that she’s just like anyone else – she has her good and bad sides. Even if I don’t enjoy her vocals, I respect her work as an artist for how boundary pushing it was. I also hate how much racism and sexism she was subject to, just for marrying John. And so what if she contributed to breaking up The Beatles? I’m glad they splintered when they did, without spoiling their legacy like so many other bands (cough… the Stones… cough) did.
More to the point, can somebody recommend me some good Yoko songs? Preferably some more palatable ones, though I’m not adverse to some weirdness if it’s listenable.

@QuarryMan these are really the only ones I know but I like them pretty well:
(and another version with Porcupine Tree which I like)
and her stuff from Milk And Honey is pretty good, I think.

Yoko has spoken of how she shut herself in the bedroom and cried after John’s death. Who are we to say she didn’t grieve because she moved on with her life?Expert Textpert said
I remember a picture from the papers back in the second week of December 1980, which I haven’t seen since, where Yoko was clearly devastated and in obvious grief… it wasn’t just about grieving over someone that you love, it was the circumstances in which she’d lost him… people tend to forget that Yoko Ono had an onstage seat during THE Worst Nightmare… I can’t imagine what that must’ve been like, even for someone with nerves of steel like her it’d just be goddamned awful… it’d be most understandable if she wanted to forget all about it and “move on”…
If your significant other died would you never be seen enjoying yourself again?Expert Textpert said
not a question that anyone likes to ponder, for sure… but I’d have to say that I personally wouldn’t be able to handle it with the fortitude that Yoko has… she’s truly inspirational…
during the Dakota years she made a lot of money with her business decisions.Expert Textpert said
it was my understanding that the Dakota years were a troubling time for them financially… isn’t that why John liquidated his Rolls Royce back then?… I seem to remember them owing (not sure what they’re called in the U.S., but it’s Revenue Canada here) a lot of money… living in New York City ain’t cheap either but Yoko was able to pull them out of it without mortgaging the farm… I sometimes wonder if that was one of the reasons that John started recording again and made plans to tour again… even the rich have to work… in many ways they have to work even harder to maintain what they’ve all ready made for themselves…:-)

@QuarryMan I hate the notion that the Stones would have a better legacy had they not stayed together. Its ridiculous. Thwy have hits in every decade, worldwide stadium tours, and a 50+ year tenure as a band. It is legendary and in no way a spoiler of legacy.
Anyway, here are some good Yoko Songs (that don’t sound absolutely bonkers.)
@Beatlebug nailed it with
Yes I’m Your Angel
Hard Times Are Over (this strikes me as heavily John’s song with Yoko singing. Yoko does credt writing credits however)
Sleepless Night
O’Sanity
For a bonus treat (this song is ridiculous but kind of good) Your Hands.
Hopefully somebody can come around and recommend her music separate from John Lennon . ET has done it throughout the two main Yoko threads at several different times.

Not to get the thread off topic, but I personally would rather my favourite band break up in their prime and go out on a high than be disappointed by new material they release. This doesn’t just go for the Stones, but a host of other bands such as Oasis, or Aerosmith.

Their thought process is probably something like this (the following statements are me imagining I am such a person):
I don’t like Yoko Ono because she is a Japanese woman.
Racist.
She is a bitch and she should keep her mouth shut.
Hateful and untrue.
I wish her songs were not on John Lennon ‘s albums at all.
Irrelevant.
She broke up the Beatles and she thinks she is actually an artist but she’s not.
Not true.
How could she want equal billing with a man? How preposterous.
Sexist.
However, I know that it is socially unacceptable for me to express these thoughts because people will say I am a misogynist. Therefore, I will instead attack that weird screaming sound that she makes and pretend this is the reason I don’t like her. And I will pretend that making this sound is the only thing she ever does.
Why do people say these things?
Love one another.

For those who just got this snippet of the conversation, this was me wondering why a certain type of person seems to think Yoko Ono doesn’t sing, and instead only makes that weird vocal/screaming sound. I suspect there is something else behind this viewpoint, and I was exploring what might make a person say such a thing. It seems to me that “I don’t care for that weird sound she makes” would be sufficient to say, unless there were some other reasons a person didn’t like her. It seems to me that people tend to express so much hatred and prejudice against Yoko in their comments that there has to be more than dislike of the music at play.

Not liking Yoko’s music is one thing, and I can definitely understand why people were annoyed that John was sharing his albums with her. But the racism and sexism directed towards her was and is absolutely appalling.

I don’t know what the correct term is for people of Japanese ethnic origin, but even from my own experience I’ve seen her called all sorts of racist slurs directed against Asian ethnicities, so I hate to imagine what the reaction of people in the 60s was to John marrying her.
I guess I would just say that hating Yoko’s music is perfectly legitimate, since that’s just subjective enjoyment, but that hating her on other grounds is mostly just ignorant.

Of course, but wouldn’t it be racism against her being Asian because Asian is a race? If it’s anti-Japanese-ism (e.g. DIRTY JAP LADY EWWW ) then I guess you could loosely describe that as racism even though it’s technically incorrect, because I can’t think of a proper term for anti-Japanese-people-ism either.
(One Google later: According to what @Necko always referred to as ‘the almighty Wikipedia’, the dominant native ethnic group of Japan is the Yamato, and there are a few others, and it’s a pretty ethnically homogenous place [probably on account of being a chain of islands]. Hmm… that wasn’t terribly useful… I guess it’s just bigotry )

People in the 60s did hate the Japanese for their role in World War Two. They were also placed in concentration camps in the USA.
Back in the day before Asian was the acceptable term, all Asian people were called “Orientals” by white people. It wasn’t meant to be racist.

As I have pointed out previously, because of the brutal treatment of POWs in WWII, both military and civilian, resentment against Japan lasted far longer than it did against Germany. In 1998, during the State visit of Emperor Akihito, I was among those on the streets protesting the lack of apology.
