Yoko Ono honored with Hirshhorn concert and Union Market mural
A bit of the article
WASHINGTON — You can’t write music history without Yoko Ono’s impact on The Beatles.
But the Tokyo native is more than just John Lennon ’s widow; she’s a prolific creator of conceptual multimedia, blending technology, audience participation and social activism, from exhibits at New York’s Museum of Modern Art to a Golden Lion Award at the Venice Biennale.
“She’s important for many reasons,” Hirshhorn curator Mark Beasley told WTOP. “I really enjoy her generosity in making work. You might see it as extreme and minimal, but actually behind it, it’s really human. There’s a lot of heart there. … I think she creates this space in which people can engage and be creative. Part of our project is offering that to people.”
This weekend, the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden will pay tribute with a special Concert for Yoko Ono, Washington and the World from 7-10 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $25.
…
The concert event is the fourth and final entry in Hirshhorn’s summer series “Yoko Ono: Four Works for Washington and the World,” which commemorates the 10th anniversary of Ono’s Wish Tree for Washington D.C., which was planted in the sculpture garden as a gift in 2007.
Since then, summer visitors have tied nearly 80,000 handwritten wishes to the tree’s branches, which are then collected and sent to Ono’s Imagine Peace Tower in Iceland.
“It’s essentially a proposition to the public, quite a generous one, to think for a moment, make a wish, write it down and tie it to the tree,” Beasley said. “Every summer, the Wish Tree opens again, in the winter it’s dormant, but it’s open to anyone to make any wish they want.”
…
Even after the Hirshhorn exhibits close, Ono’s legacy will remain with a new mural at Union Market titled “Relax. Your Heart is Stronger Than What You Think.” It’s the inaugural project of Hirshhorn in the City, an initiative to exhibit contemporary art beyond the museum walls.

My favourite thing Yoko has ever done:
Yes, she really did put ‘A Single Plum Floating in Perfume, Served in a Man’s Hat’ in her exhibition last year.
That, in my book, gains her ‘legendary’ status.
Well done Yoko!
I appreciate that kind of nonsense art. Some may not realize that it’s at least 100 years old now (the Dada movement began in the original Aughts if not around the fin du siècle). Midway between then and now, we’ve had, for example, Salvador Dali’s “Lobster Telephone” —

Liam Gallagher writes song inspired by Yoko Ono meeting
Liam Gallagher has written a song on his album ‘As You Were’ which is inspired by his meeting with John Lennon ‘s widow Yoko Ono.
The 45-year-old singer was invited by the Japanese artist-and-musician to visit her at The Dakota building in New York City at the apartment she shared with John from 1973 until he was tragically murdered outside the building’s entrance in 1980.
Yoko asked Liam to come and see her after being touched that he had named his son Lennon Francis Gallagher – who was born in September 1999 to his first wife Patsy Kensit – after his hero and her spouse.
Whilst he was at her home the ex-Oasis star was fascinated by a banner written in Japanese that she had in her kitchen and once Yoko had translated the words for him Liam wrote the saying down and he has included it in his upcoming song ‘I’ve All I Need’. In an interview on ‘The Chris Moyles Show’ on Radio X on Wednesday morning (10.04.17), Liam revealed: “I’ll tell you an interesting fact. There’s a line in there (on ‘I’ve All I Need’) that says ‘I hibernate and sing, while gathering my wings.’ I was over in New York once and I got a call saying, ‘Yoko wants to meet you’, and I just called me kid Lennon. So anyway we go to Yoko’s house in the Dakota building. Cut a long story short, we go in there and in the kitchen – she invites us in and makes us a cup of tea – and she’s got this banner, massive banner round the kitchen, and I said, ‘Oh what does that mean?’ And she goes, ‘Oh John asked the same question when we went to Japan to meet my parents.’ Anyway it says ‘while I’ve been hibernating, I’ve been gathering my wings’, and it was when he stopped making music. So I thought, write that down. So anyway, years go by, I’ve been trying to get it in to a song, could never get it in, and then it happened on that.”
After the birth of his and Yoko’s only child, son Sean, John took a hiatus from music from October 1975 until October 1980 when he released his comeback single ‘(Just Like) Starting Over’ followed by the album ‘Double Fantasy ‘, which came out in November the same year, just one month before he was killed at the age of 40.
Before Liam’s meeting with Yoko, the global icon had sent the ‘Wonderwall’ singer and Patsy a package of baby clothes and a card congratulating them on the arrival of their son, who is now making a name for himself as a model.
Previously revealing Yoko’s gift, Liam – who telephoned Yoko to thank her for the present – shared: “The card said, ‘To Lennon, welcome to the world, love, love, love Yoko 99’. I was freaked. Then a big box of baby clothes came from New York.”
Keep those phrases and bits of music around. They just might turn into a song.

I found that offensive and didn’t think it was funny at all, except for the bits about Zac at the end. Ive always thought Stern was way-overrated (I like the occasional wisecrack,) and he doesn’t say anything new about that phony hypocritical greedy schemer here that hasn’t been said before, but wittier.
Still, this isn’t the “Yoko Ono Appreciation Thread” so I won’t protest.
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

I did think about putting it in the appreciation thread since it was one of the most recently updated topics at the time I shared that video. I figured it would be easier than finding a more generic Yoko thread, but I decided to be a little less lazy to preserve the integrity of her veneration thread.

Since it opened 19 years ago, Hamburg bar ‘Yoko Mono’ has operated successfully and without legal trouble. But that all changed this summer when the famous artist, singer-songwriter and widow to John Lennon took action to sue the bar from using her name without permission, reports NDR.
In a surprising result, the regional court in Hamburg on Friday ruled in the 84-year-old’s favour, stating that the bar couldn’t continue using its name.
Bar owner Nima Garous-Pour was disappointed with the decision, saying that another bar he operates in the city called ‘John Lemon’ has not faced legal challenges.
“I am indeed sad about what is happening here. We hoped that we could keep the name,” the owner told the German Press Agency (DPA).
According to court spokesperson Kai Wantzen, the name ‘Yoko Mono’ is so similar to that of the world-famous artist “that it was sufficiently likely that an observer would surmise some kind of link between Miss Ono and the bar”.
“In any case, the assumption of a mere coincidence is unlikely,” he added.
In July, Garous-Pour had responded to the request to change the name of his bar by getting rid of the first word in its name. Since then the bar has simply been called ‘Mono.’
Now, following the court’s decision, the first part of the bar’s name will have to stay covered up.
Garous-Pour and his lawyer Jens Kristian Peichl are considering making an appeal.
I wonder why it took 19 years for her to take action?
Have you seen this story in Germany newspapers or other media, @Martha?

I wouldn’t be pointing out my surprise about the lack of a “John Lemon” lawsuit, if I was the owner. Since Yoko recently sued over the “John Lemon” lemonade in the UK and won (this year). I’m sure the bar owner can expect another lawsuit soon.
And let’s be honest, if you have two bars and call one “Yoko Mono” and the other “John Lemon”, it’s got to be hard to argue that it’s purely coincidence and that you’re not playing on John and Yoko to sell your product.

Oh yes, I had seen reports on this topic in summer already when they were forced to change their name from Yoko Mono to Mono and over the last few days of course.
It’s interesting how the article refers to the court’s decision as ‘surprising’ – over here the media had made it look like a hopeless case for the bar’s owner from the very beginning.
I’m a bit sad about the whole incident because I like Yoko a lot and think she is a very cool person but that wasn’t a very cool thing of her to do, in my opinion.

Do we have a Danish forumpudlian?
New Denmark stamps feature Yoko Ono’s artwork
The words “Dream” and “Smile” are featured prominently on the first stamps designed by Yoko Ono, an artist, musician, activist and the widow of John Lennon .
The designs also represent the sun and the moon, respectively.
These Danish stamps were issued Jan. 2 in a souvenir sheet of two. According to Postnord, the souvenir sheet is an “extension” of the “Yoko Ono: Transmission” exhibition at the Kunsthal Charlottenborg art gallery in Copenhagen. The exhibition opened Oct. 12, 2017, and runs through Feb. 18.
The gallery described the exhibition as exploring “the unique ways in which the artist transmits her profound messages of artistic philosophy and peace through numerous channels to reach people throughout the World.”
Each stamp bears a denomination of 27 krone, paying the new rate for international letters up to 100 grams. The rate went into effect Jan. 1.
The stamps are se-tenant (side-by-side) in the sheet.
On the stamp on the left, “Dream” is written on a symbolic yellow moon. The word “moon” is at the top of the circle and “Y.O. [Yoko Ono] 2018” at the bottom. Similarly, the stamp on the right features “Smile” on an orange sun.
The phrases “I Love You” and “We’ll Meet Again” are repeated in the background of the two stamp designs and in the selvage of the souvenir sheet.
According to the publicity image from Postnord, the last line in the selvage of the souvenir sheet also includes “Yoko Ono Spring 2018.”
An announcement about the souvenir sheet on Ono’s website included 10 questions with the artist about postage stamps and letters. (Here’s a link to the article mentioned: http://imaginepeace.com/archives/23239)
One question asked why she wanted to design stamps.
Ono replied: “Because I was always interested in stamps and how they looked, and whose face is on them. Usually it’s somebody very famous.”
She was also asked about the messages conveyed by the words on the stamps and in the selvage.
As for the “Dream, moon” and “Smile, sun” printed on the stamps, she said: “The message I want to give them is energy and power and this is the way I send a warm wish for it.”
Ono explained that the phrases “We will meet again” and “I love you” referred to whenever she thought about a person “we are meeting in the air.”

Thanks for that. I think it’s fair to say that Howard is not a Yoko fan!
I also listened to another interview by Stern,in which he rips into Michael Jackson. I think the guy just likes to be controversial. I’ve always said he’s the double of Slash from Guns N Roses
Still writing the words to the sermon that no one will hear......
