I’m gonna hafta boist yer bubbles, gang — The REAL “fifth Beatle” is/was the obnoxiously audacious DJ: Murray the K.

Why? Because he annointed himself with the title that was allegedly bestowed upon him by George (Harrison was joking, but his comment is documented):

Listen to Murray:

Read about Murray:

Some say he even had ideas about being the “sixth Stone”… but that’s another story.

I know when it's a dream.

pete-best  It wasn’t just the hours.  It was the years.  And a lot of his beatley moments were downplayed by the band (and their associates) over the years because it wouldn’t make sense to promote Best as a member of the band after they’d given him the boot.  That’s no fault of theirs; all bands do that.

It’s true Ringo was much more of a mate to japage3 than Best, and his skill was superior.  But that shouldn’t detract from the fact that Best -as their longest tenured drummer during their formative years- is not only a Beatle, regardless of number, but there’s argument that he’s also a founding member.  Though it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that you won’t find any supporting quotes for that.
