Not top anymore – Thriller is. They’re third, behind Back In Black (AC/DC, for anyone who lives under a rock and has never heard of the album) (crickey, wrote that as Baby’s In Black at first). That Eagles greatest hits albums is like 5 or 6.

Pink Floyd…. That reminds me, at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame there was a giant wall (representing “the Wall” of course) with a really scary looking teacher popping over the side and an equally creepy looking “Roger Waters” that really was just some sort of nylon doll without a face on the other side. There was also a story about how Waters came up with the concept of The Wall. It was very weird and a little terrifying, but hey, it's art. The story talks about how Waters hated the fame that was thrust upon him and it led him to do some shocking things.

I was reading an interview Ringo gave in 1976 whilst promoting ‘Ringo’s Rotogravure’ where he mentioned thinking Queen were the ones who would take on the Beatles mantle but didn’t.
“I really thought Queen, for a moment, would take it somewhere. They did a fine album and I thought, ‘At last, there’s a new group coming up that’s really going to go somewhere.’ But they went somewhere else and just stopped.”

I was just going to mention Queen in the conversation, not because I think they’re the next Beatles; but it is impressive that all four members wrote songs and each had at least one released as a top ten single.

To be another Beatles, a band would have to show the amount and radical quality of musical transformations — that would be a sine qua non, whatever else is also needed (fame, talent, charisma). I can’t think of any band that went through transformations like that.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned Electric Light Orchestra here. I think they’ve been described by somebody (maybe George Harrison ?) as what the Beatles might’ve sounded like if they’d continued on into the 80s, and to an extent I agree – the other day I was listening to the Concerto for a Rainy Day from Out Of The Blue (because it was raining, duh) and my mom heard it from the next room and thought it was the Beatles. Obviously they didn’t come close to having the cultural impact that the Beatles did, but musically, there was a huge and acknowledged influence there.

Very few bands have the consistency of The Beatles. The back catalogue is too strong for anyone else to come close. The only other band that does in my opinion is U2. Lots of bands had potential but never truly expanded upon it, like Nirvana. I like some of their songs but there’s a lot I don’t. I don’t feel that way about The Beatles or even U2. Liking some songs doesn’t make me a full blown fan, I have to be satisfied with the overall picture.
