Why is this such a big discussion point? Considering that being a first or second gen fan is something that on can’t control, why does it matter?
Because it’s fun.

Though, just to be pedantic, it could be argued that the real first generation fans are those who saw them at The Cavern and in Hamburg, those that bought Love Me Do , Please Please Me , etc, those that kept the Please Please Me and With The Beatles LPs occupying Number One on the British album chart for a whole unbroken year.
Much of the discussion here is about the American fan experience, and the definition of what makes an American first generation fan.
May I be so bold as to suggest that the Americans were late to the party (as they so often are) and the real first generation fans are those that fell in love with them in Liverpool, Hamburg, the UK, Europe, Australia…

If we’re going down that path, the REAL REAL REAL 1st genners are the ones that knew The Beatles as The Quarrymen. You’re right about the US coming late to the party, as The Beatles weren’t that popular here until The Ed Sullivan Show performance in 1964, although my mom did know them from the She Loves You single in 1963, whereas in the UK, they got popular in 1962. It makes me wonder if you guys knew about Queen before Sheer Heart Attack and Killer Queen, as I don’t know anyone who knew about Queen’s first 2 albums when they first came out except for one of my older brother’s friends who was born in the UK in 1962 and moved to the US in 1979 and got into Queen with their song Seven Seas Of Rhye (although he never bothered buying the albums until Sheer Heart Attack).

Come on, Ron, don’t you know there is no other country besides America?
The land of the brave, free, superior measuring system, superior mixes of I Feel Fine and She’s A Woman with added reverb, and the NTSC video format instead of PAL. I think that Europe should switch to the Imperial measuring system and NTSC 60FPS video format.

FALSE. The Quarrymen are the Quarrymen – they are NOT The Beatles. The Beetles aren’t even The Beatles.

In my opinion, Sheer Heart Attack is their first US album, as I know no one who knew them before it either and I didn’t know about them until I checked the inner sleeve of Greatest Hits and saw 2 covers of albums I never heard of before. Before then I thought Keep Yourself Alive and Liar were live only tracks. One of my friends told me that in the UK, instead of having Footlongs at Subway and Quarter Pounders at McDonalds, they have Meterlongs and Quarter Liters, those damn lucky b******s get bigger food portions than us.

We should talk about other bands, such as Queen:I say 1st gen fans for Queen end at 1974 because that’s the year their first album that had any success in the US came out, Sheer Heart Attack.
This thread is in the “Yesterday and Today” forum, the purpose of which is given in its subtitle, “Chat about any other business to do with The Beatles”.
How does trying to turn a discussion about 1st generation Beatles’ fans into a discussion about 1st generation Queen fit with “Chat about any other business to do with The Beatles”?
If you want to discuss other bands 1st generation fans you should create a new thread in the “All Together Now ” forum, which is the place for general discussion.

I finally had a look at that other thread. I reopened it and altered the title just a tad to keep the conversations going in the correct direction.
Sorry it took me so long to have a proper look at the thread @sgtpepper63.

Why does it matter what time of the year and if it really does matter, Let It Be was released on May 18th, the same month my cousin turned 3. If we’re saying first gen fan is someone old enough to remember The Beatles while they were still around, we should give them until the end of 1970. Although if you must know, one of the memories he said he had was listening to some Beatles songs on the radio while going to a restaurant with us for Easter, which landed on March 29th that year.

Because they weren’t together for all of it, if you can be a first gen fan after breakup, then everyone on this forum is a first gen fan.
But was he a fan when he first heard the Beatles?
