I don’t really remember getting made fun of for liking the Beatles when I was in high school a mere five years ago, but I guess they’re more relevent now because of Rock Band. I have talked to people who claim to dislike them, and so I ask them to name five songs and when they can’t get past Hey Jude , Twist And Shout and “something about peppers” I generally stop listening. One of my good friends has listened to nothing but rap for the last ten or so years, and he just a asked me one day “so what’s the deal with the Beatles?” I decided to give him Rubber Soul . He listened to it and asked me if he could have Revolver without me having to tell him what Revolver actually was, so apparently he did some research. I don’t know, it just really told me that the Beatles are for everyone, you just have to give them a chance. And if people are too cool for the Beatles then it’s truly their loss because of how good they actually are. I mean, wow are they good, they are The Beatles!

I'd probably use another picture, one where they look happier, but I love Paul's expression and posture.

Yes.
How about this: If you could give someone one Beatles song to listen to (before you told them it was the Beatles), what would you give them?
I'm not sure what I would do, so I'm bouncing it off you guys.

I would give them something cool that they had never heard before, like I'm Only Sleeping, but that's just because that's the first Beatles song I can remember really liking. It just has to make them realize that the Beatles are so different because they did songs that no one really does now. They are complete with backwards guitar solos, yawns and lyrics about a guy that's just really tired.

It depends of the person. For example, a friend of mine who loves crazy rock, I showed her Tomorrow Never Knows and she loved it. My teen students love early romantic songs like If I Fell and And I Love Her . So I guess it depends of the person.
But in general I guess Things We Said Today and Norwegian Wood is a good start.

I'd probably show them a really pretty Beatles song, most likely one of Paul's, like Mother Nature's Son or Blackbird . But, yeah, I agree that it probably depends on the person.
I don't think I've ever actually known anyone who makes fun of the Beatles, but to the ones who say they aren't good, I also ask them to name a specific number of Beatles songs they don't like, and they can only name, like two It's pretty hilarious, and really satisfying, when one owns a Beatles-hater.
OH! I'd show them the Abbey Road medley!! That's the one.
I'm in love, but I'm lazy.

Probably “Hey Bulldog ” because I'm so passionate about it that my passion would be dead clear…the vocals, the bass, everything is spot on in sound. The lyrics are a good mix of whimsy and deep. Plus it's a proper BEATLES song – the last, by all accounts – where they all collaborated, rather than say “Blackbird ” or “Yesterday ” or “Here Comes The Sun ” which were very individualistic.
But, really, this whole thread just confounds me. I know people who don't care for their music and perhaps don't subscribe to the piety about The Beatles, i.e. they don't believe that just because majority belief is that they were legendary and amazing means that they have to enjoy them. That's fair enough. But, no one's ever made fun of The Beatles to me; they might have a giggle or a slight dig at the degree to which I enjoy them (like my mate singing some song called “Obsession” or something when I was showing him something), but no one has the brass ones to really say anything against them. If they did, I'd probably just laugh and continue on with my life.

Dang! I'm going to have to start a new thread!
Wait …. Why am I “upset” about it?
It'll be in the “songs” forum.

Found this:
Ha ha ha, awesome! That reminds me of someone at school who heard me singing “Baby's in Black” between classes:
“What are you singing?”
“'Baby's in Black.'”
“What?”
“You know, 'Baby's in Black.' By the Beatles?”
“The Beatles? Nobody born after 1970 listens to the Beatles!”
“I guess I'm the exception to your rule.”
We had many Beatles-related discussions, the “Two of Us” did.
NOTE: The aforementioned idiot DO NOT have memories longer than the road that stretches out ahead. Or wear raincoats standing solo in the sun. Or… just listen to the song.

Hey Bulldog is good!
I think what younger people don't realize enough about The Beatles is what we had before them. I'm not knocking earlier rock 'n' roll because they were certainly influenced by it. However the record industry (at least in America) was trying, rather successfully to tame things when The Beatles hit the scene and put an end to that. Comparison is the key. Putting in perspective what was out there at the time. You think I Want To Hold Your Hand is so tame becuse you were born in the 80's? The Beatles are bubblegum? Listen to Fabian and the crap that was out when I Want To Hold Your Hand hit the stores in the US. I Want To Hold Your Hand was HARD ROCK, my friend. And The Beatles took it from there. Four years later it wasn't I Want To Hold Your Hand . It was Helter Skelter . Rock and roll was not tamed by the record industry. Rock and roll was redefined by The Beatles. It takes a lot of bands 4 years to come out with one album these days. Beatle haters? C'mon, do you mean dumb-asses? What crap. Anyone who knows and appreciates the actual evolution and history of rock music also knows The Beatles were the shot in the arm that allowed rock and roll to survive and exist in the way it does today. My two-cents….
Bringing you the best and worst of The Beatles, since 2007.

A co-worker (a generally cool guy) made the mistake years ago of ridiculing the Beatles during a musical discussion, calling them “overrated” and sarcastically reciting “Love, Love Me Do /You know I love you!” as proof. So I instantly start to rant and foam at the mouth: “Oh come ON, get some perspective! First, that's only the first song they ever wrote! Second, it's also the WORST song they ever wrote! Third, all rock lyrics were usually crap in those days anyways! Fourth, lyrics are NOT music, and it's their MUSIC that was revolutionary! Fifth…” That's more or less what I said, except he started laughing before I finished, and remarked that i was well-prepared for an argument – “You've had this discussion before, haven't you?” Turns out he had no particular anti-Beatles feelings at all, was in fact a big “White Album ” fan, and just started the argument for fun, figuring I'd swallow the bait and get all wound up. A job well done.
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.
