Perhaps these aren’t the most conventional Beatles places to visit when touring Liverpool, but I want to see them.
1. Brian Epstine’s grave in Kirkdale Cemetery.
This site seems to indicate that the cemetery is only open on Sundays (listed as being open 24 hours – perhaps from sundown on Saturday to sundown on Sunday).
The Google street view car went by when the gate was open.
2. Stuart Sutcliffe’s grave in Huyton Parish Church Cemetery on Blue Bell Lane
We made it to Stu’s grave, but didn’t make it to Brian’s. I had someone driving me around so I don’t know the bus stops near them. I’ll take a look this weekend if no one posts the answer first.
Stu’s grave is towards the back left-hand side of the cemetery.
I hope it is not just Sunday Kirkdale is opened because I fly back on the Sunday 🙁

gagamee, it’s worth pointing out that John’s Uncle George (Toogood Smith), Aunt Mimi’s husband, is also buried in St. Peter’s churchyard (which is where the Rigby grave is).

I have just posted somewhere about looking for some Beatles sites, well I was in the middle of writing the post when I hit submit by mistake so it is somewhere with a partial heading 🙂
Found the post for you and moved it over.
I am so diggin’ your avatar, @Gagamee.
I’ll get some of my photos from Liverpool together and post them. I’ll look at bus stops too.

Make sure you have the book The Beatles’ Liverpool by Ron Jones.
I still can’t say enough WOW for Ian with the Fab4Taxi tours. http://fab4tours.co.uk/
Maybe @Ron Nasty will share his “Beatles pub crawl” experience with you. I think I could spend hours upon hours at Ye Cracke with fourmpudlians all gathered together having a blast.
Use Google maps or another map application to find the bus routes. Here’s an example of a route from the center of Liverpool to Huyton where Stu’s grave is.
Here are a few pictures from where Stu is buried.
I placed flowers on Stu’s grave.
In the picture below, see the big pot of yellow flowers. Go right a little and just about one row back from there and you’ll see the flowers I placed on Stu’s grave.
For Kirkdale Cemetery, looks like you can choose rail or bus.
If you would, list the places you already have planned (this thread already has some great ideas listed), and then we will see if we have anything to add to it.

If I’m remembering this correctly, @Gagamee, to find Uncle George’s grave, walk up the path on the left-hand side of the church. This is worth doing whatever as the field at the back of the church is where Paul first saw John, so walking up to the back of church you get to see where that all important first meeting began. George’s grave, as you walk along that path, is one of the graves on your left. It has recently (since AG and I were there) had some restoration work done on it.
I also have a feeling (I have a crap memory for location of things) that the Rigby grave is in the back of the churchyard. I could well be wrong on that one though.
Maybe @Ahhh Girl remembers the location of the Rigby grave better than I.
One thing to note when looking at the Rigby grave, is that Eleanor – surprising as it was for the time – kept her maiden name. Her husband is shown as being a Woods.
This fits with the line in ER that she was buried “along with her name”. Much as Paul denies the grave being where the name came from, other than subconsciously, there are elements that perfectly fit the song.

From what I recall, RN is correct about the location of Uncle George’s grave. Here’s a picture.
Eleanor Rigby ‘s grave is more towards the side of the church than the back. If you are walking on the path towards Uncle George’s grave, ER will be on the right and closer to the street (ie you would pass her’s before getting to Uncle George’s grave). Here’s a picture.

@Ahhh Girl Thank you for the suggestion. The book took some time and effort to find, and then I had to wait for it to be in stock, but it’s on its way to me now. I’ll let you know what I think when I get it.

I visited Liverpool for the first time last Wednesday as part of a week long trip to the North of England and Scotland (hence why i’ve been away from the forum for a few days).
I have to say that I was pretty impressed with Liverpool as a city, despite hearing some negative things about it
It was a boiling day to my surprise – they are normally few and far between.
So the first place I visited was Strawberry Fields on my way into the city. It was pretty busy with tourists as you’d expect.
After that I briefly went to Penny Lane on the way into the city.
First thing we did after arriving in the city was go to the Beatles Story Museum. Whilst I didn’t think it was too bad, it did feel disjointed and there was barely any mention of Rubber Soul , Revolver , MMT and the White Album . The lack of information kind of irked me.
Nevertheless it is pretty cool seeing Beatle artifacts so it was definitely worth the visit. A few of the photos I took are below:
(Casbah guitar played by John, George and Paul)
(Blue vinyl edition of the White Album signed by Paul)
(Glasses John wore when writing Imagine )
After the museum we heading across to Matthew Street and to the Cavern Club.
The Cavern was really busy (this was midday-ish) and a guy was perfoming John Lennon solo and Beatles songs.
He played Jealous Guy , Working Class Hero , I Feel Fine , Instant Karma !, Woman and Glass Onion before going on a break.
Some photos I took from Matthew Street:
(Cavern hall of fame)
(Klaus Voorman signed copy of Revolver and Special edition Hofner Violin bass displayed in the Cavern)
(Eleanor Rigby looking lonely down the road from Matthew Street)
So overall it was a great visit and I would definitely go back. Next time I’d like to visit Paul and John’s houses and some of the other historic Beatle spots. If you are ever thinking of visiting Liverpool as a Beatles fan then I wouldn’t hesitate!
