Yesterday someone posted a nice print of the Monkee’s movie Head on you tube. It is really different 🙂 – maybe an American version of Magical Mystery Tour ??

Head is so much better than MMT though. There’s so many intricate layers to it and in the end it all sort of fits together.

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8I know what you mean Evangeline. I just didn’t want anyone who isn’t familiar to think it was a concert movie. I agree there are some profound themes.

Through my work I have recently come into possession of Mike’s work and home address. Of course we are not stalking him at home, but I think I have come up with a way that he might approach us in the parking lot at his work. Here is my plan. His office and studio are in a place called Sand City which is near Monterey (California). There is a place in Monterey called Charlie Brown Park which is near a Starbucks, McDonalds and an English tea place. It’s about 5 miles from his location. I suggest we meet early in the morning, buy some drinks, get ourselves pumped up with some Monkees tunes and head over there. At that time I will distribute green wool beanies to each of you.

I propose we hang-out in the parking lot until Mike arrives. I seriously don’t see how he could resist coming over to say howdy. Also of great interest to the forum at large, I do believe that Mike was present at the session when the Ahhhs were recorded for ADITL. Perhaps his eyewitness account will finally bring an end to our ongoing forum controversy.

Mike was present during sessions for A Day In The Life and there is footage of Mike talking to John.

Micky was also invited for the sessions for Good Morning, Good Morning and he even covered it for his Remember album.

Peter Tork also played banjo on George’s Wonderwall album but was uncredited.

Also Micky, Davy and Peter appeared in a Pizza Hut commercial with Ringo.

I’m a huge Monkees fan and at one point regarded them to be more interesting then the Beatles but that was a short phase but I still the Monkees.

In regards to a previous question of course they are a proper band. Regardless of the reason that the got together they have written some amazing songs and put out some amazing records and have continued to tour on and off for the past fifty years.

If that doesn’t make them a real band then I don’t know what will.

I would but being in FL I wouldn’t be able to. But I approve, let’s end the Ahhhs controversy once and for all. Let us know what happens if you do this!

Watched Head for the first time on YouTube last night and I can say I wasn’t disappointed one bit! I love all the different subplots and scenarios and how they unexpectedly link together. My favourite parts were Mickey vs the Coca Cola machine and the whole birthday party scene, but my favourite song from the entire movie was Daddy’s Song. Some great dance moves from both Davy and Toni Basil!

Head is such a great film. I didn’t get it as a kid but I appreciated more and more after each viewing much like the Magical Mystery Tour Film.

I love the Micky vs the Coca-Cola machine scene as well and the live performance of Circle Sky proves how good the Monkees were as a live band.

Currently up to “Monkees at the Circus” in my marathon (I’ve been watching 2 or 3 episodes on most nights). My favourite episodes so far are “The Chaperone”,  “One Man Shy” and “I Was A Teenage Monster”. Picked up a lot of great songs along the way too like Papa Gene’s Blues, Mary, Mary and Laugh (oh-ha-ha-hah)!

@sigh butterfly can I join the Mike beanie club too? Pleeeeease!

I love Head!  Sure, it rips off a bunch of ideas from Beatles films, but it also has a lot of other great stuff in it, and it’s a riot.  Off the top of my head, my favorite scene is where Peter happens upon Mike and Micky standing outside the studio set making wagers on whether the wailing bikini girl is going to jump off the roof of the building or not.

My favorite thing about the TV show is how much of a comically loser band they are and how they have to struggle so hard just to get the most ridiculously crappy loser gigs.heart

Yes, @SpecialCup that made the show very relatable to anyone who has ever been in a band. Also I always enjoyed the fantasy of the guys living in the same place. It was sort of an extension of the Beatles home scenes in HELP!

Does that make our expedition group the First International Band? a-hard-days-night-george-10

Also, I do still have my sideburns (although a lot shorter ATM because of my recent haircut, a-hard-days-night-paul-3but I’m in the process of growing them back!) so I’m sure Mike would appreciate those!

Yes @SgtPeppersBulldog that will be our official group name! I probably can’t get my sideburns going again (my wife despises facial hair) but I did once own one of these shirts with the big white collar. I don’t know though, there is probably a thin line between attracting him and scaring himahdn_george_08paul-mccartney

Looks like Mike is coming to visit me before I had the chance to go see him and he’s even bringing a friend beatlemaniacs_02_gif

First Ever Michael Nesmith and Micky Dolenz Tour Starting in June

Monkees.jpgImage Enlarger

New York— The Monkees’ Michael Nesmith and Micky Dolenz are hitting the road in June for their first-ever tour as a duo. They’re calling the tour The Monkees Present: The Mike and Micky Show (as opposed to simply The Monkees) because their fellow surviving bandmate Peter Tork is not participating. Though the set centers around the classic group’s vast catalog, Nesmith and Dolenz plan to roll out deep cuts and rarities. “It will be very different than a Monkees show,” Nesmith said in January. “I mean, it’ll be Monkees music, but there’s no pretense there about Micky and I being the Monkees. We’re not. We’re the remnants.”

The Monkees reformed in 1986 shortly after MTV put their old television show into heavy rotation, earning them an entirely new generation of fans. With the sole exception of a brief fun of U.K. show in 1996, Michael Nesmith didn’t participate in any of the reunion tours. Shortly after the death of Davy Jones, however, he stunned fans by returning to the group for three consecutive summer tours. He participated in their 50th anniversary LP Good Times! in 2016, but he stepped away from their touring outfit, leaving Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork to continue as a duo.

On September 16th, 2016 Nesmith – who recently resurrected his early 1970’s country rock band the First National Band in early 2018 – played a show with the group at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles that was billed as a farewell to Monkee Mike. He doesn’t view this tour as a reversal of that decision. “This isn’t Monkee Michael and Monkee Micky going out,” he told Rolling Stone. “[But] we’re using the Monkees logo and name to promote it.”

Peter Tork explained in a press release that he was skipping the tour to focus on his upcoming Lead Belly tribute album, Relax Your Mind. “I have in general made no secret of the fact that all these recent years of Monkees-related projects, as fun as they’ve been, have taken up a lot of my time and energy,” he said. “Moving forward, I have blues projects that I want to give my attention to, hence Relax Your Mind. So, I’m shifting gears for now, but I wish the boys well, and I’ve learned to never say never on things further down the line.”

Nesmth also hinted that there might be slightly more to Tork’s decision than the need to focus the Lead Belly album. “I’m afraid I would betray a confidence if I said any more than, ‘This is not a right time for him,’” he told Rolling Stone. “He has his reasons. They are very private.”

Even without Tork, the tour will be a great chance for Monkees fans to see Dolenz and Nesmith explore parts of the catalog that past tours have neglected. “These 16 special performances will feature songs that span the group’s entire career – from its 1966 eponymous debut to 2016’s Good Times,” reads the press release. “The shows will highlight many of Nesmith’s compositions, including some that have never been performed live.”

“I love being onstage with Micky,” Nesmith says in a statement. “We’ve been collaborating for over 50 years, so it’s hard to believe it’s never been just the two of us. I’m excited to dust off some tunes that I haven’t played for a long time too.”

Dolenz concurs. “Right from the get-go, I admired Mike’s songs,” he said in a statement. “When we used to get together around the campfire to sing in the early days, we were always doing his songs. We always had such a great a vocal blend; he was the one who encouraged me to write songs of my own. I’ve always been a big fan and now we finally get to do the Mike & Micky show that we riffed on back when we were shooting The Monkees.”

“The Monkees Present: The Mike & Micky Show” is the latest chapter in Monkee-mania, a saga that began in 1965 when four young men were cast in a television show about a struggling rock band that was inspired by the Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night. Few could have predicted the impact the Monkees would have on music and pop culture at large, one that still reverberates more than 50 years later.
