Too funny @Zig, I didn’t notice the original date. Actually I was researching the proper use of the Mal Evans smiley and read the threads backwards. Maybe we can revisit the topic in 2020!

@Zig I know we didn’t anticipate revisiting this subject so soon, but there has been another Joan Baez encounter to report. Saturday I was chaperoning my teenage nieces at a Taylor Swift concert and look who made a surprise appearance 🙂 I tried to explain why I was laughing out loud but my nieces only got more confused; “What is Mal Evans thread and do you really know someone named Zig”?

Very cool, @sigh butterfly . Glad I could help provide you with a “Beatles Bible Moment”. Here are more coincidences to consider…
Taylor Swift was born and raised mere miles from where we now live.
Is that Julia Roberts on Joan’s left (our right)? She is one of my wife’s favorite actors.
How was the show? I hear she puts on a good one.
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

Yip thats Julia Roberts.
Taylor’s shows get very good reviews and she sings live unlike another blonde mega-star who was huge for a period of time but couldnt sing in tune live unless a magic pixie came along and cast a spell.

Yes @Zig, it was a fun high energy show. The songs are staged with dancers and such which is a little distracting, but the music & singing were definitely live. Taylor has a self-effacing manner which I find to be an attractive quality. One cool part, there were bracelets taped to every seat and during one song they turned the lights down and all the bracelets started flashing colors in unison to the beat. With everyone waving their illuminated hands in the air it looked like a high tech version of the old “flick your bic” tradition at concerts. And you are right, I had a most unexpected Beatles Bible Moment at the show :)!

Love that clip. The song was obviously written for Mal.

Believe it or not I went to school with Mal’s Son Gary, we were quite good friends. At that age (15) I didn’t have a true appreciation of the Beatles or the significance of Mal.
I know that his widow was left with nothing and really struggled. Much later she sold some memorabilia including hand written lyrics and at some point it got legal. Until that point they (the Beatles) were still in touch with Lily (wife of Mal) but afterwards there was obviously an issue. I’m no longer in touch with Gary but having seen a recent photo he looks just like his dad

He had a daughter, Julie Suzanne, born in 1966.
Mark Lewisohn discusses Mal’s diaries in the an interview he did with a podcast/radio show called Let it Be Beatles. I can’t remember when it was – I heard it the other day on his site – but he mentions that he had access to Mal’s diaries for a brief time in the early 90s, but he didn’t take copies of them and he no longer has access to them. Presumably they’re still in the family.
Edit: I think it was this interview

Various sources say that Mal Evans, Beatles roadie, kept a diary or journal during his time with the Beatles. Supposedly, as the story goes, he was also working on a manuscript for a book around the time of his tragic death, but that may be an unsubstantiated rumor. Mal did become a regular contributor to the Beatles Monthly (fan club magazine), so he was keeping tabs on the Beatles activities.
What has become of Mal’s diary or journal, assuming it existed?
Mal, being a “company man,” was extremely loyal to the Beatles, even after he was fired by Allen Klein. I don’t think he would have written a “tell-all” book to expose juicy, embarrassing stories about the band. However, a potential publisher might have insisted that Mal include such tales in a book.
