I've been wanting to start a Mal thread for a while now because the man intrigues me. What fun it must have been to travel everywhere with the Beatles. Whenever you see footage of them either on tour or sometimes on vacation, Mal's kisser eventually shows up on screen (love his brief cameo in AHDN ), but other than on this site, there is very little known about the man.
If you care to share any Mal-isms, feel free to join in. If I'm the only Mal fan here, I can live with that!
I'll kick it off by sharing a drinking game I developed (don't try this at home til your 21 kiddies!). Here is what you need.
1) The Anthology DVD's – if you don't own them, you can watch them on YouTube.
2) Mass quantities of your favorite beverage (yeah, alcohol – otherwise all you get out of this game is a full bladder).
The rules are simple. As you are watching Anthology you will take a drink of your beverage when Mal appears on screen as follows.
- Face only – one sip
- Head and shoulders – 2 sips
- Full Mal – drink half of your drink
- Mal with his shirt off – chug that sucka down – bottoms up!
- If by this time, you are seeing double and you see 2 Mal's, slam a new drink or go to bed and wait for your hangover.
Cheers!

I've just been writing about The Beatles' trip to the Philippines in July 1966. When they finally got on the plane to leave, Mal and Tony Barrow were called off it – it turned out some papers needed signing before they could leave. Anyway, Mal was terrified that he'd be stuck in the country and turned to the others and said “Tell Lil I love her”. Lil was his wife.
Also, Mal and Gary Evans, his son, were with The Beatles on the Mad Day Out. Gary's in some of the pictures in the new Don McCullin book.

Yeah, Joe I recall George H. relating that story on Anthology. The way he told it, the Phillipinos called Mal, Tony and Brian Epstein off the plane and took the money that was earned for the concert. His memory of the event may have been a bit fuzzy though, because signing papers would make more sense. I couldn't imagine Brian, Tony or Mal carrying actual cash from the gate receipts with them.

I guess I'd better explain. There are actually a few (at least 2 I can think of right off) instances during the Anthology series where Mal appears shirtless. The first I can think of is when they were renting a house in Florida during their first US visit and they were swimming in the pool. The other was during John's dream sequence in Magical Mystery Tour . I seem to remember Mal was seated at a table in the restaurant sans shirt.
I am a fan of his, but not that kind of fan – not that there's anything wrong with that!

And I just recently learned (courtesy of BellaDonnaNightshade) that Mal was the lost Channel swimmer in Help !, so make that THREE instances shirtless! (Not sure if they show that footage in Anthology though….)
That poor gentle giant…..what a way to go…….
