A while ago a friend sent me a link to the video for “Take It Away” by McCartney. It’s a fun video made when Paul was riding high from “Ebony & Ivory”. And it charted fairly well all over the world.
But I totally drew a blank about its existence. Pause for a moment and enjoy the clip. It’s got Ringo! It’s got George Martin! How can it not be a classic…?
But it’s a non-entity now. No appearances on any hits collections. No radio play. Nothing.
So that got me thinking… Maybe we should have a thread devoted to the solo singles that were released and for whatever reasons have been forgotten. We should speak of their merits, their failings and why they failed to capture the zeitgeist.
Not to pick on Paul, but here’s another that while not a hit single, certainly did chart:
Let us discuss…
E is for 'Ergent'.

The whole entity which was Press To Play was a flop, the singles and the album. I think it was down to the music being a bit out of the scene at the time and the disaster that was Give My Regards To Broad Street . The public never bought into it despite the positive reviews from the critics.
I always thought Take It Away bombed but wiki notes it getting to #10 in the Billboard Hot 100 and #15 in the UK and its on the Wingspan compilation.
I’ve Had Enough from Back To The Egg was a single and is never thought of. Following on the heels of With A Little Luck i would have thought it would have done better but its another that is rarely seen, played or on compilations. One of the best tracks on London Town with a bit of an edge to it thanks to the guitars and the unhappy, fed up lyrics. I always think Paul swears in that song.

Sorry to be pedantic but I’ve Had Enough is on London Town . Another forgotten song is Young Boy from 1997’s Flaming Pie . Also Beautiful Night from the same album.
even Goodnight Tonight which was an International Hit in 1979 is now largely forgotten. This isn’t helped by the fact Paul ignores this song during his live shows.

“Mull Of Kintyre ” was a huge hit that he never really does anymore.I wonder if it has to do with D.Laine having co-written it?
You've got a lucky face.

Might be why its never thought of on Back To The Egg then. And never be sorry to be pedantic when it comes to Beatles errors.
Mull Of Kintyre is usually kept for and pulled out when he comes to Scotland. So if you want him to perform it again then you have to get Paul to come to Scotland again. C’mon Paul, come to Scotland.

And Canada, I’ve noticed. It wasn’t a hit in the US.

Yip. Girls School was the preferred choice in the US and got the airplay. Hadn’t noticed Canada but there are very close links between the two countries.

I was there at that Glasgow Gig. A real magical moment and highlight of the set.

Forgot all about this, only remembered when reading about it. A live performance of Mull Of Kintyre from the 27th October Glasgow concert of Paul’s 1989/1990 World Tour was released on 26th November 1990 on the 12″ single All My Trials.

I still have never heard “Press”, the single, to my knowledge. I thought 1986 was a particularly terrible year for pop radio at the time (it looks slightly better in retrospect) and avoided radio listening as much as I could. And the single apparently did even worse in Canada than in the USA/UK (and isn’t included on Wingspan), so my not hearing it isn’t really surprising.
And yeah, he should lose the hair dye!
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

That video made me so angry when it came out, it struck me as unbelievably lazy.

I still say look at photos of Mike McCartney and then see if you still want Paul to lose the hair dye.

OK, so I just Googled an image of Mike McCartney, and yeah the guy’s head looks like a Q-Tip. But, Paul is only calling more attention to his age by having such dark hair. He could find some middle ground with the hair color… after all, there are “fifty shades of gray”… and no, I’m not referring to that, uh… book.

Bungalow Bob, I can’t think about that book without thinking of this conversation. My question for Paul there goes well with your comment here, I think anyway.

Thanks for the pertinent link, Ahhh Girl. That was fun readin.’
Megopop09 posted two very good tunes from McCartney’s “Flaming Pie ” that I had completely forgotten about: “Young Boy,” and “Beautiful Night.” Wikipedia says those two songs were released as singles in the UK, but not in the US. I really like the music on both. Maybe they could have been “hits” if the lyrics had been more focused or universally relevant, so that people could actually relate to them somehow. But, wow, they are well-written melodies.

The only McCartney song I ever hear while flipping through radio stations is “Maybe I’m Amazed ” (with the occasional “Live And Let Die ” and “Silly Love Songs”) So in a sense, all his solo songs are forgotten… which I can never understand. [why is there no McCartney station on satellite radio???]
Ironically, one of the songs playing at a Barclay center restaurant the night McCartney played there was “Take It Away.” No one around me seemed to take notice even though everyone was ostensibly there to hear McCartney later in the evening.

181.FM’s Beatle station on the smartphone app TuneIn Radio is on of the closets stations that I found that plays Wings songs on it occasionally. They play all sorts of songs from the solo careers of the beatles I was able to hear some forgotten songs mentioned here like Goodnight Tonight, Take it Away, Mull Of Kintyre , and Let Em In on it as well others. I can listen to it all day
And if you saw my love, I'll love her to.
