I’m sure the mods will move if that’s the case. But the point remains that there’s no neutral place to report on a covers album outside of the news or starting a whole new thread, which I try not to do.

Gotta be honest, got no idea what it is that the mods might move. The conversation and posts here seem to be fine and on topic.
The Flaming Lips concept album was pulled together as it was in bits and pieces throughout the forum. There is another separate covers thread which focuses on the ‘Please Please Me’ album remake and i believe buried in the archives is one for that George Martin album (whatever its called, the one which has Jim Carrey murdering a Beatles song (‘I Am The Walrus ‘?)).
And yes there is no neautral thread for covers, tho generally covers threads turn into discussions on whether covers are good or bad with tons of examples or related ones being added. Feel free to create one tho.

notes about some of the hilights tracks on cd1.
The Exterminators – A band who seems to be less than thrilled about the popularity sweeping the world. A clever and amusing anti Beatle song.
Nina Simone – A reworked version of Revolution to speak to the times then, approved and loved by Lennon.
Terry Manning – Who is in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, but is mostly known for his involvement as a recording engineer on some very epic albums. Look him up if you enjoy his version of 909.
Rolling Stones – Their 2nd release just a year after forming. Reached #12 in the UK
Joe Cocker – Before his signature style developed, and with Jimmy Page then as a session musician, tough to beat. Even though it’s a straight forward cover.
The Meters – Have loved this band for a long time, and while other good covers of this tune exist, they win by default.
Harry Nillson – Most here may know his very creative version of You Can’t Do That (which is also included), but it’s his version of Lennon’s Isolation that just leaves me speechless.

I like the entire 2nd disc, it has better flow than disc 1.
It starts with Aretha’s transformed Eleanor Rigby and doesn’t slow down until Marvin Gaye’s silky Yesterday which didn’t chart?? The finale is by a girl from Ghana. Here are those songs.

If you have any thoughts on the mix, or suggestions on ones I might have missed please do share! The project isn’t quite complete, but I’d like it to be ASAP so I don’t add a third disc.
Here are some tracks I also liked that didn’t make the list either due to choosing another version of the song, it was too straight forward of a cover, or there wasn’t enough room.
Ike & Tina Turner: Come Together & Get Back
The Jam: And Your Bird Can Sing
Bryan Ferry: It’s Only Love
Pink Fairies: I Saw Her Standing There
Suzi Quattro: I Wanna Be Your Man
Tomorrow Never Knows : Junior Parker
Siouxsie & the Banshees: Dear Prudence
Al Green: Get Back
Sufjan Stevens: What Goes On
Fiona Apple: Across The Universe

Of all the Paul songs that would be right at the bottom of the covered piled. Pretty cool to see. Thanks for the post @parlance.

Not best, but memorable (in a way):
First Marty Gold’s pioneering Moog Plays The Beatles: if you’ve ever wondered what Eleanor Rigby done as a TV action show theme might sound like, this is the cover album for you! My mother bought this album in 1969 and it was the first way I heard some of these songs. Think about what that does to a child. I do think In My Life is nice in a Muzak kind of way (which is something you can level at half the songs), and there are more if you search “marty gold moog plays beatles” on youtube (but I’ll let you voluntarily suffer that):
(yes that IS the cover of the album and the back cover is the reverse right down to the figurines). Here’s a little bit about the album by a fan. Other highlights of the album for me are Fool On The Hill and an astonishingly good Good Night .
And certainly memorable is Tiny Tim’s rendition of Nowhere Man on ukulele and screech excerpted here from one of the Beatles Christmas Records (1968):
There. Now you cannot escape from my Beatles covers of Doooom!

I can’t stop listening to it or singing it to myself. It’s haunting, sad and gorgeous. The introspective guitar gives me goosebumps.
I like that Letterman showcases these older, less well-known performers. I hope Colbert continues the tradition.

I never would have picked that for a soul song, amazing.

This might not stay up for long – I’ve seen a couple of versions already removed by YouTube after takedown notices. Kurt Cobain’s lo-fi home recording of And I Love Her .
