Paul’s Simon’s performance and interview (with transcript if you can’t view it) are up at Conan’s official site.
I’ll edit with YouTube links later, as the above links probably aren’t viewable outside the US.
Edit: YouTube video of Paul Simon on Conan O’Brien last night (they haven’t posted the interview there yet):

“A French group covering “Free As A Bird.” Hard to believe there are only two people singing, their sound is so full.”
They don’t sing the bridge! (“What ever happened to…”) Tsk, tsk. Sorry, got to take off a few points for that.
I figured maybe they decided to base it more on the demo version.

But the demo includes the bridge. It may have been incomplete and needed work, but at 1:30 you’ve got John singing, “Whatever happened to / the life that we once knew…”

The Joe Cocker version of With a Little Help From My Friends has to be up there as he was such a great performer and when he played Woodstock he had such a talented band.
If you’d like a lesser known cover check out Bill Wither’s version of Let It Be of his debut album produced by Booker T Jones!!! Stephen Stills also played guitar on this incredible record.
My friend plays in one of the best Beatles covers bands in the UK, The Day Trippers and they’ve got an awesome version of Saw Her Standing There – check it out on their page!

Simon has been covering hcts since at least 1976 when he hosted Saturday night live. he also hosted with George as musical guest once, and seriously upstaged George, all the musical numbers had Simon but not all had George, and George did nothing solo, Simon shared the stage with George for every number and sang most of the leads :/ Simon’s opening monologue was performing Still Crazy after All These Years in a funky chicken outfit lol.
I forgot to mention this during George week but how about Dhani & friends covering Let It Down ? it rocked out. it matched the sound of the original atmp version nearly identically, thanks to George’s voice coming out of Dhani’ mouth.
incidentally I just simultaneously discovered the entirety of georgefest on YouTube and the fact that my phone somehow figured out (on its own) how to connect to my (tivo) dvr. I knew the dvr got YouTube but lacking a keyboard on the remote, searching is cumbersome at best. and since the phone is on WiFi in my flat, no data usage worries

Bill Withers is great. Excellent songwriter, unique soul sound, incredible voice (Ain’t No Sunshine is an example of how to sing forever on one breath – I think he sings “I know” 16 times and has enough left to raise the volume and sing “I gotta leave the young thing alone”). Thanks for that pointer

Just heard Florence and the Machines cover of ‘Oh! Darling ‘ which i found to be enjoyable.
Sometimes the comments on youtube are fantastic, take for instance the one below taken from the section for this live in Liverpool version of the above.
I really liked this – especially the notes she managed to sing in tune. There weren’t many – but they were worth waiting for.

That is an amazing cover, capturing the essence of the song instead of trying to impose creativity which often doesn’t produce the desired result when covering the Beatles.

Am listening to Paul’s ‘Up Close’ concert from December 1992 and the bluegrass version of ‘Can’t Buy Me Love ‘ is very enjoyable, I think it was posted previously by someone else on here.
‘I Wanna Be Your Man‘ was also given a new arrangement.
Would love it if Paul reworked more of his back catalogue instead of playing them straight even if they aren’t as good.
And worth noting that Paul performed an 85 minute show and didn’t do ‘Hey Jude ‘, ‘Let It Be ‘ or ‘Yesterday ‘. I needed smelling salts to bring me round when that was realised.

Hello all,
Over a glass of red, I reviewed this thread last evening. Many fantastic versions were posted! As I mentioned in my intro (in the other forum), I’m in the process of creating a mix of beatles covers for some friends / family. (Which essentially has been finished, not including artwork. I’ve been working on this casually for the past 8 months.)
My rules for making this were. No repeat songs, and minimalist production methods. While I very much appreciate Across The Universe , and I am Sam films, I didn’t include any tracks from prior “well known” compilations discs as well. No Motley Crue, Aerosmith, Tony Bennet, Jack Johnson, yadda yadda. For the most part, I only included covers which differed substantially from the Beatles versions. The band pretty much perfected their style, and for another to reproduce might be noteworthy, but not memorable, unless I was watching them live.
I don’t think that I’ll be posting links to every track if on Youtube (some are which are posted here), but if interested, I’ll post the playlist and artwork. I’m not entirely sure this is the place to post it, as a few of the tracks aren’t technically “covers.”
Cheers.

I’ll let you decide if it’s one of the best or worst, but The Flaming Lips have a 9-part mini-documentary on their album, With A Little Help From My Fwends, starting with this one:

@phile24. I’d be interested to see the tracklisting and the artwork of your 8-month project (that’s some dedication). Don’t get hung up about posting tons of links, if folk want to hear the song they can always search for it themselves.

MMM & others here… Here is the track list I’ve put together. You may notice that the art work doesn’t coincide with the songs, but it’s a part of a booklet.
I’ll post notes about some of the tracks as well.
Cheers.

I was waiting to hear this album to possibly include tracks, but it didn’t fit the bill, and sadly I don’t think it’s going to be anything memorable.
The Art of McCartney due out soon seems to have a bit more promise from what I’ve heard.

I like Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds more than most here. Unfortunately, we don’t have a neutral title for covers – it’s either best or worst.
