They gave us 42 minutes and by then the Beatles and Billy had nothing else to play. It made for a nice ending.Actually i doubt the Police would have cared less if stuffy folk in the neighbouring offices hadn’t of complained. The Beatles are giving a free concert on the roof! You should be putting the papers down, taking the telephone off the hook and putting your feet up to savour the moment and music, not bitching about it.
The office people didn’t give a crap about real music. They just thought that anything that didn’t go with office crap was basically a threat. Basically, they’re all drags. They suck!
By hook or by crook, I'll be last in this book.

I’d bet that a lot of them DID set their duties aside and go have a listen – in my experience, office workers love being distracted! I know I do, unless it’s by something nobody could possibly care about.

It would be cool to know what that’s like. You hear that and you think, “Huh, somebody’s playing music.” Then you walk over to Saville Row and you look up and you say, “It’s The Beatles! On the roof!?” And you watch the show with amazement.

@The Lost Beatle Billy Preston was awesome! He did an awesome job on Let it Be, did some great songs, inspired “Love the One Your With” by Stephen Stills, and sang Get Back on the movie Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Local business folk complained about the noise and the disruption to their working day. The fivesome had exhausted their repertoire however and were coming to the end anyway.

Thanks for reminding us, mmm. I love the video even more than the audio. The whole concept just strikes me as so cool. I like the beginning when they spill out onto the roof, squinting around and ducking under the railing. Then Paul jumps on the planks to test them and Ringo yells for Mal. It just humanizes them to me.
I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'.

I hope this is all tongue-in-cheek. The first experimental mobile phone call was made in 1973 and the first commercial mobile phone was made available (for $4,000) in 1984.

Okay… delete button is where?
@C.R.A., the forum had a really bad experience with people being able to delete their own posts.
So, now, the way it is set up, if you want a post deleted, simply edit your post to say “Mods, please delete”. One of us will delete it the next time we log in.
C.R.A., if you would, “thank” this post so I know you saw it. Then I’ll delete your post and this one.

Can we not delete posts from months and years ago? It screws up the forum if folk want to go back into the past and delete.

No, mods wouldn’t delete something from a long time ago. Only recent posts that people haven’t done a lot of replying to. That’s the way I understand it.

Yes. The fact that our great mods at the moment wouldn’t go back and delete old posts doesn’t mean that they couldn’t. A mod could have a mad night/day (depending on time zone) when they knew @Joe was a-sleeping, and delete every thread in the forum, and nothing we mere mortals could do could stop it. Luckily our mods are all (reasonably) sane! (fingers crossed!)

Anyway, back on topic…
The greatest description I ever read of the Rooftop Concert – which something in my head tells me was in Norman’s original Shout!, though it’s not in the current edition, and I can’t be bothered to go through my many boxes of books to find my first edition – is this, and this is obviously a paraphrase:
Four musicians playing together like no four musicians ever would, or ever could, again.
I just thought that line was pure genius, describing that moment to perfection, and it is still one of my favourite single lines written about The Beatles.

While the breakup is sad this concert was a very interesting way for the live part of it all to end. One last show at Wembley Stadium would be totally unable to match the drama and mystique of this one. Kind of like Mozart dying with an unfinished requiem being the last piece of music he was working on.
