It’s clear not everyone likes their music or thinks they are the greatest band ever BUT they remain the most important. If you ask the artists who became famous in the 70s and 80s who they blame for getting them into music, many will say the Beatles; people as diverse as Jeff Lynne, members of Black Sabbath, Paul Weller, Squeeze and more plus countless others in countries all over the world.
More than than that, in their own way they promoted Great Britain PLC, sold this country to the world. For a time, Britain seemed to be the centre of all that was hip and new..You suddenly had Americans wanting to visit Liverpool -of all places. They opened doors for people in and out of music.. Their TV appearance at the London Palladium in 1963 was cited as an inspirational moment for some. Whether they are the greatest musically is debatable, but the influence they had on musical culture is hard to beat…..
