One more Spotify playlist, this time the available EMI releases in UK release order (playlist link, Spotify URL). It tries to give a faithful sense of the UK release chronology (and hopefully save lots of skipping between Past Masters and the albums) without either butchering the albums or repeating songs too much. So all the singles are included in full, as are all the albums which contained new material except the Collection of Beatles Oldies and No One’s Gonna Change Our World: just the new tracks in those cases. I may later junk those singles which came out simultaneously with or after the albums they share material with, but I haven’t decided yet. No solo or side projects, nothing that isn’t on Spotify, mandatory stereo all round.
A playlist that adds in Beatles-era side-project albums available on Spotify could be interesting, but it’s hard to know where to draw the line to exclude heavy going like Electronic Sound .

Spotify only has stereo 🙁Ok, I might sound like the worst Beatles fan for saying this but… I prefer the Beatles in stereo, so I don’t mind.
Personally I don’t care. Some mixes I prefer in stereo, others mono. There is no set definitive mix for me for any album – bar the ones that don’t have a stereo/mono mix. Some of the later remixes (Anthology DVD/Rock Band) I find are better.

The stereo-only thing is a cute bit of market segregation for Apple (Corps) of course: they get the streaming fees and mass exposure, while many of the people who would have paid to buy the songs will still cough up for the mono versions, and for the Anthology and BBC tracks. It’s probably not unrelated that just after the streaming went live there was evidently a big copyright purge of unofficial Beatles uploads on YouTube, which had evidently been completely tolerated for years.

Surprised that ‘Love Me Do ‘ is in both considering so many say its outdated and one of their weakest tracks.

Yip. Apple/EMI/Universal/whoever have decided after many years of not giving a toss that the peasants are playing football with their ball that they’ll take it back. Its this crap that totally pisses me off – its one step small step forward, two leaps backwards. Two moments of common sense and sensible business approaches obviously was too much for them and soon enough it will be back to official tonsil dusters and drainpipe wipes.

Is anyone going to think “Oh I cant listen to it on youtube, i’ll pay £10 a month to do so”?
No doubt in a few months they will slowly start to appear again.

I’m actually new to this whole “streaming music” thing. I’ve used Spotify, but I get bothered with it when it doesn’t work when I’m not within my WiFi range. But, I got a different app for streaming (Rhapsody) and it’s much better than only having about 20 – 30 Beatles songs on a crappy YouTube playlist. I’m pretty satisfied with it

No doubt; in the meantime, we Beatlemaniacs still need our fix cause we’re goin’ down.

Its more a pain for not being able to link to a Beatles track for whatever reason, i dont often listen to the Beatles on youtube. Still, at least you can still get this incredibly cool fake ‘Glass Onion’ outtake – the solo is brilliant. Whoever came up with it deserves a job at Apple.
The Local (a news site that has a Swedish edition) reports that
Swedish firm Spotify, the largest streaming service, said that fans in the first three days had streamed Beatles songs 70 million times — which means that on average every user of the site listened to one Beatles song around the Christmas holiday.
‘Come Together ‘ was well ahead as the most popular song, with more than 2.3 million streams as of early Monday on Spotify.

the lack of mono is to avoid confusion in the masses. Almost no one in the public actually cares about the mono mixes, so they didn’t put them on so as to avoid any confusion and to keep one canon there.
I love streaming, Spotify is pretty much the best deal in existence. $10 a month and you can listen to anything. Well, unless it’s Tool, Prince, Taylor Swift, or Neil Young, but it’s still completely worth it.

Surely the general public are clever enough to tell there is a difference if one says mono mix and the other doesnt, even if they dont now what the actual differences between the two are. However I can see that being Apple’s thinking – plus you need to pay lots of money to get the mono if you want it (or just go to places online and download it for free) and that makes Apple smile.
