I sent him a present, too! And a lovely card too. Most of my friends sent him things too, though — I hope he gets mine among all the other presents and cards from fans that must be flooding in.
I wonder how Beatles celebrate their birthdays?

My aunt just bought me their latest single! I don’t know if it’s been released in the US or not, but the songs are called ‘Eleanor Rigby ‘ and ‘Yellow Submarine ‘.
They’re REALLY different to anything else I’ve heard by the band, or anyone really. ‘Eleanor Rigby ‘ doesn’t have ANY instruments other than Paul singing and a string backing, which sounds like it would be really soppy and bland– but it’s not, it’s actually really intriguing and I’ll have to listen to it a few times more to get an opinion on it.
‘Yellow Submarine ‘ is just a silly children’s song sung by Ringo which I’m not particularly impressed with, but it’s catchy so I shan’t complain too much– and the harmonies are great!
Still saving up for the LP though… Has anyone got their hands on a copy yet?
Also, can someone explain to me what’s happened in the US? I heard that one of the Beatles said a controversial something or other and I’m not really clear on what it was.

YES! I just got Revolver yesterday– I had to wait to get my allowance, but some of my friends got it as soon as it hit the record shops. It’s… oh dear, where do I begin? Well, I really have no words to describe it.
First, the cover: it’s this GEAR line drawing of the Beatles with long hair tangled up all over the image, mixed with a collage of cut-out photos– all in black-and-white, but it somehow manages to be way more groovy than any other cover I saw in the shop (or perhaps I’m just biased). I’ve spent hours staring at it, yet I keep finding new little details. It’s signed ‘Klaus O.W. Voormann’– anyone have a clue who he is? The name seems vaguely familiar. Anyway, he’s an amazing artist!
Next, the music. I know I said this last time around, but I really have never heard anything like it. Truly. I thought Rubber Soul was out there, but this is truly something else. Warning: Spoilers ahead!
I bring it home when everyone else is out of the house. After the last single, I’ve safer giving Beatles records their first listens alone. After inspecting the cover for some time, I put the LP on the turntable. Is my record defective?! It starts with weird studio-chatter noises, a count-up that sounds like George, someone coughs, shouts, and then– phew!– the opening song is away; it’s called ‘Taxman ‘, and it’s all about how the taxman is going to take all your money. If only all taxmen were as handsome as George!
Next are ‘Eleanor Rigby ‘ (which peppy described), ‘I’m Only Sleeping ‘ (which sounds rather like ‘Rain ‘, the last B-side), and ‘Love You To ‘ (this one startles me the most on the first side– it’s really exotic-sounding, like the Indian music in Help ! only a whole song of it, with George droning on about death and making love– I’m glad I waited till my folks were all gone to play this LP ). Then comes my favourite so far, a gorgeous, dreamy Paul ballad called ‘Here, There And Everywhere ‘. It’s just beautiful, that’s all– and despite my staunch loyalty to George, I admit I am having fantasies of staring dreamily into Paul’s lovely hazel eyes whilst he croons the song to me . After that is ‘Yellow Submarine ‘ (which has these really cool sound effects that make you feel like you’re really under the sea and aboard a submarine with all your mates) and the the last song on side 1, ‘She Said She Said ‘ (the lyrics of which makes absolutely no sense to me– ‘I know what it’s like to be dead… and you’re making me feel like I’ve never been born’?!)
Look around to make sure everything in the house is still quiet and, with some apprehension, turn the record over. Needle on, spinning up. Low rumbly piano notes (phew, nothing too scary– yet), and then the Fabs launch into the aptly titled ‘Good Day Sunshine ‘ (this one I cannot help but dance to– a winner in my book! ). Then ‘And Your Bird Can Sing ‘ (which has a wonderful biting riff that sounds, to my ears, impossible for humans to play– what dextrous fingers our lads have! The end confuses me– is the song over? It just cuts off, leaving us with a few noodley bass notes that fade away) and ‘For No One ‘ (this one sounds like my dad’s classical records, with harpsichord and French horn, but it’s a beautifully heartbreaking song). ‘Doctor Robert ‘ (this one is strange, I don’t get it at all), ‘I Want To Tell You ‘ (I get this one very much– George sings about awkwardness around someone you fancy but your words won’t come out right, with a clumsy, discordant riff to match), and ‘Got To Get You Into My Life ‘ (this one sounds cool– another upbeat number) are next, and then the last song on the side– well, this one is even more of a shocker than ‘Love You To ‘. It’s called ‘Tomorrow Never Knows ‘, and I don’t think I shall ever know either– John sings this one like he’s on a distant hilltop, to an indescribable accompaniment of pretty much exclusively weird and backwards-sounding noises– Rain taken to the next level, times three. I can make no sense of it, and just know that this one would have this record out of the house in three seconds flat were my parents to catch wind of it.
And then that’s it, then end of the record. Needle goes back to its perch, the LP into its sleeve, and silence reigns, leaving me wondering what on Earth I just listened to.
I can’t decide if I love it or hate it– it’s so strange and otherworldly, like the ‘Paperback Writer ‘/’Rain ‘ single times ten, but it’s intriguing as well… all I know is, I shall be listening to it a lot more.
Also, can someone explain to me what’s happened in the US? I heard that one of the Beatles said a controversial something or other and I’m not really clear on what it was.
I heard it was something John said, but more than that I have no clue.

Yes, John said in an interview that the Beatles are bigger than Jesus! Understandably everyone is out of their minds about this. The friend of mine that bought Rain (I talked about her earlier) was made to throw away all of her Beatles albums and even her scrapbook she made because they (her parents) are very religious and didn’t like what John said! I’m lucky! My parents are not as religious as most americans so my Beatles Collection is safe. I believe it is even worse in the south where they are even more religious!
that might not be the best explanation so someone else may explain even better.

Wow! That’s crazy! I don’t know how I hadn’t heard this before, are you sure that’s what he said? What’s the exact quote?

Ohhhh right, it’s from that interview in the Evening Standard that came out a few months ago (I guess it took them this long to ship it across the pond). Lemme see if I can find the quote… I think it was something like:
‘Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink… The Beatles are bigger than Jesus now, I don’t know what will come first: rock and roll or religion.’
Why people find that so offensive I don’t understand; it’s nothing we haven’t known for years already. I know I think about the Beatles a lot more than Jesus!

All anyone at school can talk about is the new LP! Everyone who’s anyone has got it already, or at least heard it. I’ve been listening to it obsessively for the past week or so, and it’s really growing on me — though it’s a far cry from the Beatles I first fell in love with, almost four years ago (wow! That long already?!). It’s setting up to be my favourite album ever, although of course I usually do say that about every new Beatles LP when it comes out. Some, however, are not so sure — a girl I talked to yesterday thought it was ghastly, that she had begun to wonder if her mother wasn’t right after all about our lads being ‘dangerous’ and ‘disreputable noisemakers’. My friend and I just shook our heads in disbelieving dismay and walked off.
My friend’s older brother called it ‘polarising’ — some fans are going to love it, but they’ll lose fans as well. As for myself? Well, when I listen to, say, ‘Tomorrow Never Knows ‘, I don’t quite know. Maybe I’m amazed.
One thing’s for sure: love it or hate it, this LP is like nothing else ever done, anywhere! I wonder what people of the future will think about it? My friend and I were discussing it; of course our parents don’t think that, fifty years from now, anyone will still love the Beatles as they do now — ‘Now, Elvis, on the other hand,’ said my friend’s mum — but my friend and I hope that they will at least remember the Fab Four as something special. What do you think?

I’m 12. I’m at summer camp in Maine, and last night I fell asleep to a beautiful song; that’s got to be Paul singing, though I’ve never heard the song before. I only remember the lyric “running my hand through her hair” or something like that. They have a new album out and i bet it’s from that album. I’ve already heard Eleanor Rigby and Yellow Submarine . Love them both. Gotta buy that album when I get home. I’ll have the $2.50 saved up. [True story]

I’m catching up on some news about the lovely Beatles. Did you all hear about that firecracker that went off during the concert in Memphis? I bet it scared the wits out of them. If someone would have hurt any of them, I just don’t know what I would do.
There were not as many people at Shea Stadium this year as there was last year. I was there. I wonder why more people didn’t come? I hope that doesn’t keep them from coming back to NYC next year. I can’t wait to see them again.
I’ve heard about those %^$#@$ in the South that burned Beatles records. Good grief, they could have given them to me. I’d take them above the Mason-Dixon line where they would never have to see them again.
Have any of you heard of this woman named Yoko Ono? I’ve heard rumors about her and John. I wonder what Cynthia thinks.
Does anyone else have any Beatles news from the 2nd half of 1966 to share?

I confess I was a bit disappointed that they didn’t have an album out for Christmas (unless you count that compilation). And I saved up all my money too — I ended up buying five balls of worsted to make George a scarf for his birthday.
On a brighter note, I managed to convince my parents to let me get the Beatles Christmas record — it was BRILLIANT! I must have listened to it a hundred times during the hols. And when we went down to London to spend New Year’s eve with the cousins, I thought I spotted George in a restaurant. !!!!
I have to wonder what they’re up to these days. I haven’t heard a thing about albums, tours, films, or anything, and there are rumours everywhere that they’re breaking up. It can’t be true, of course, but I’m still very curious.

Why did you have to persuade your parents to let you get the Chrimbo record, @Beatlebug?
They’re sent out free to members of the fan club, only way to get them being a member is, and there was me thinking you were a member of the fan club…

They didn’t want me to be part of the fan club, but I finally convinced them to let me sign up. I’m so glad I did.
I got to hear them all anyway, through my friends, so I suppose they figured it didn’t matter too much whether I was part of it or not, as I had access to the records either way… It’s fabber to own them, of course.

It is kinda strange. A guy in my class thinks they’re feeling the heat from the competition. Not possible!!!
But there is a lot of good stuff out there; loving “Friday on My Mind” by the Easybeats, “Sounds of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel, and “Gimme Some Lovin'” by the Spencer Davis Group. Those bands could go far. Beach Boys are going strong with “Good Vibrations”; Motown’s got “You Keep Me Hanging On” and “Reach Out I’ll be There” + Donovan, etc…
So who knows? Maybe the Beatles have gone the way of Herman’s Hermits, the Dave Clark Five,…
Was a good run

I don’t think so, Paul was working on that film score wasn’t he? He’s probably just been too busy, that’s all…
And besides, I saw a newspaper article with pictures of them walking into some recording studio about three weeks ago.

Only that I finally, FINALLY, got to see them at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto back in August <3 <3 <3 !!! (after missing their previous four visits to that smelly hockey arena) and obviously I was too stunned by the experience to contribute anything more to this chain letter in the months since!

You’re so lucky, Von Bontee! I was going to see them at the NME Poll-winners concert in May (where the Stones, Small Faces and Yardbirds were also playing) but we had to cancel which is a great shame (to put it lightly).
I’ll just wait ’till they next play in my area, which hopefully won’t be too far in the future.
