What’s interesting about RedLennon’s post is that this Paul Simon song was released during the Beatles’ (and Rolling Stones' heyday.
It’s not a sentimental look-back.
Is there any more recent equivalent of someone singing about a contemporary band?

Well…Happoradio (Acid Radio, I don’t know if they were thinking about LSD or not when they named the band) Sings “Take me away from Kallio(a place, it means rock), the son of a porn dealer is selling gold records in Europe” They are talking about HIM
edit: of course HIM is nowhere near as big as the Beatles

and Peter,Paul & Mary- I Dig Rock And Roll Music
I dig Donovan in a dream-like, tripped out way
His crystal images tell you ’bout a brighter day
And when the Beatles tell you
They’ve got a word “love” to sell you
They mean exactly what they say
Take this brother; may it serve you well.

In his comeback album, John Fogerty sings in “I Saw it on TV”:
We gathered round to hear
the sound comin’ on the little screen,The grief had passed, the old men laughed, and all the girls screamed
‘Cause four guys from England took us all by the hand,
It was time to laugh, time to sing, time to join the band.
Interesting, I love John Fogerty and CCR, but never noticed that part of the lyric.
However, the only song I know of with a Beatle reference by far is “Life Is Real (Song for Lennon)” by Queen. I think it’s only mentioned in the song title, though. The song was written as a tribute to Lennon.
"Real music is made by real people playing real instruments using own creativity and skills."

Possibly innocent Lennon reference, but in Feist’s Mushaboom, here’s the chorus:
Old dirt road
Knee deep snow
Watching the fire as we grow old
(Old Dirt Road being a song of John’s off Walls And Bridges , I do believe.)
As if it matters how a man falls down.'
'When the fall's all that's left, it matters a great deal.

Billy Joel’s song She’s Got A Way has a blatant reference to Anyway; a Paul McCartney masterpeice on Chaos And Creation.
She’s got a way of pleasin’
I don’t know what it is
But there doesn’t have to be a reason anyway

Arkells – John Lennon:
She tells me her favourite song And I say:
“Yeah, that’s a good one”
She says it follows her around
No s**t, it’s by the Beatles
And the chorus:
And I’m John Lennon in ‘67,
I’m John Lennon in ‘67
I’m John Lennon in ‘67,
I’m John Lennon in ‘67
This is one of the most kick-ass songs I know. Closed out their concert that I saw on Friday with it.

I’m into a lot of indie music, and there’s a FANTASTIC band called “Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes”. They (along with Fleet Foxes) are probably the most modern-day “hippie band” I can think of, and many of their songs were clearly inspired by The Beatles. In the opening track to their debut album, “Up From Below”, the chorus goes:
Ah, it’s the magical mystery kind
Ah, must be a lie
Bye bye to the too good to be true kind of love
Oh I could die
Oh now I could die
And directly after the chorus, voices come on sounding a lot like the “ho ho ho, hee hee hee, ha ha ha” that would be in “I Am The Walrus “. Except it’s kind of like their own take on it, if that makes sense…
And for the pop scene, the closing track on James Blunt’s “All the Lost Souls” contains this chorus:
And if I can’t hear the music and the audience is gone
I’ll dance here on my own
And I hope the Lonely Hearts’ Club Band will play out one last song
Before the sun goes down

Has “Annie Christian” by Prince been mentioned yet?:
“She killed John Lennon /Shot him down cold/She tried to kill Reagan/Everybody say “gun control, gun control”
That was from 1981. (LOTTA high profile people getting shot back in those days.)
GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

I kind of found another reference in a Florence + The Machine song last night, but I’m not completely confident that they were consciously making a Beatles reference. Anyhows…in “Dog Days Are Over”, there’s a line in one of the verses that says:
Happiness hit her like a bullet in the back
which I connected to “Happiness Is A Warm Gun “. Could just be my Beatles nerdiness coming out tho…

I think you’re over thinking this one, Dipsy. There’s a point where it’s just reading too much into it – but it’s great someone else actually knows Flo. Welcome!
Isn’t it one of most popular bands atm?
