Drive-By Truckers — Once They Banned Imagine
(post partially copied over from my “listening to right now” post)
This song title refers to the list of songs the Clear Channel recommended their DJs not play in the days immediately after 9/11, one of which was “Imagine.” The list also included Ticket To Ride, A Day In The Life, Ob La Di, Ob La Da, and Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds. Go figure!
The song’s chorus:
But once they banned Imagine it became the same old war it’s always been
Once they banned Imagine it became the war it was when we were kids

Sly Fox’s Let’s Go All The Way has this “Working in a factory Eight Days A Week ” which is a bit Beatles-ish to me.

‘The Story of Bo Diddley’ by the Animals: “About, uh, one year later, in a place called Liverpool in England, four young guys with mop haircuts begin to sing stuff like ‘It’s been A Hard Day’s Night , and I’ve been working like a dog’ and so on.”
An odd track, that one.
‘Good Time Music’ by the Lovin’ Spoonful: “But them kids come over from the Mersey River, made us think back till then.”

Tom Paxton met John when they both attended the 1969 Isle of Wight Festival to see Dylan. Paxton wrote this in response to the meeting, an affectionate response to John’s increasing political activism and the wider world’s struggle to accept “Crazy John“. It appeared on his 1970 album Tom Paxton 6, and this is a live version from the following year.

This came to mind in another thread, and I don’t think it’s cropped up here yet.
1986 a group called Laugh release a single called Paul McCartney . Paul, allegedly, tried to have it banned on the grounds it could cause confusion:
There’s no way people might think that’s a Paul McCartney single is there?
Anyway, if he did try, he was unsuccessful. It’s a pretty good example of ’80s Indie:

I’m seeing Drive-By Truckers this weekend, so I’ve been listening to their albums in chronological order on my commute this week. This morning I realized that there was another Beatles reference, albeit subtle — a song called “Outfit,” written by Jason Isbell during his tenure in the band. It’s a song that relates the advice his father gave to him when Isbell starting hitting the road in pursuit of his Rock ‘n Roll dreams…
Don’t sing with a fake British accent. Don’t act like your family’s a joke.
Have fun, but stay clear of the needle, call home on your sister’s birthday.
Don’t tell them you’re bigger than Jesus, Don’t give it away.

Madonna’s ‘Material Girl’ has the lyric
‘Cause we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl
You know that we are living in a material world
And I am a material girl
I wondered if it was a direct influence thru ‘Shanghai Surprise’ but Madonna’s song was released in January 1985 and ‘Shanghai Surprise’ began filming in January 1986.

That song always gives me a “Living in the Material World” vibe.

Ballad Of Sir Frankie Crisp “a shining pool of Inner Light”
I thought the lyric was ‘Eyes are shining full of inner light’. Either way, the reference is there.
I also hear Joan and Molly, both of which are Beatles characters (Maxwell’s Silver Hammer and Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da )… but as they’re mentioned (‘Special Thanks to….’) in the sleeve credits of George Harrison , it’s likely that they were real people and not deliberate references.

The special thanks could be a George nod back to the songs, especially as those two tracks are two George disliked. Would be bizarre if George referred to ‘Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da ‘ twice considering how much recording the song pissed him, and the others, off.
