Considering the fact that the Beatles had hundreds of songs in their repertoire by 1963, it’s no wonder that many great cover versions didn’t make the cut.
The four studio albums in which they included cover versions, Anthology 1 , the two Live At The BBC comps, and the Star Club tapes certainly feature some of the best, but by reading Lewisohn’s Tune In, you get the impression that for each great cover they recorded, another five were abandoned, never to be heard.
So with that in mind, which songs from their pre-fame setlist you wish you could hear?

My latest re-reading of Tune In had me daydreaming about these two particular songs:
- Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow (The Shirelles) – lead vocals by John. Apparently quite a moving take on the song, according to Cavern Club frequenters.
- What I’d Say (Ray Charles) – lead vocals by Paul. Again, one of the highlights of their 1960/63 live act, apparently a song that they would stretch out to 10+ minutes with call and response with the audience. Imagine that!

Great question. Someone on Reddit made this playlist about a year ago with songs that they did and didnt record/release officially.
I love Cathy’s Clown, and they play it during the Get Back rehearsals, as they do with a lot of the early cover repertoire. (Which is part of what led to the inclusion of Maggie Mae .) Would have loved to hear the early version of this and Buddy Holly’s You’re So Square.
I’m also a huge fan of Artie Shaw’s version of Begin the Beguine but Ive never been a huge fan of the lyrics so its probably not on the top of my list. As for never heard covers heres what Id want to be able to hear.

Corrine Corrina (the Leon Russell/J.J Cale version is so good thats how I got into this song)
