I cannot believe everyone seems to have missed the band “Fools Garden”. Their super hit “Lemon tree” sounds almost more Beatles than The Beatles themselves… And despite what most people think they are not (or should not be) a one hit wonder. In fact, close to 100 % of the Fools Garden songs are catchy, unlike most bands who puts a lot of nonsense on their albums. Just listen to “Rainy day” and its similarities to “When I’m 64” They have also made at least two Beatles covers; “Martha My Dear ” and “Cry Baby Cry “. Their biggest influences are The Beatles and Oasis.

I know XTC has been mentioned but I couldn’t find a mention of their own Peppers, the Dukes of Stratosphear. If you get Chips from the Chocolate Fireball you’ll get the two albums they made as the Dukes. It’s an overall exploration of psychedelia but two songs in particular stand out: Collideascope which has a very solo Lennon feel to it and Brainac’s Daughter is the McCartney, very Martha My Dear . I’d also put What in the World?? in there as a general Beatles pastiche of Rain Taxman and Tomorrow Never Knows !
Neil Finn and Tim Finn are much less direct but often evoke a Beatles atmosphere on their songs, be it Split Enz, Crowded House or solo. Not The Girl You Think You Are by Crowded House is probably the most direct Beatley tune.

@RoundGlasses, I consider Out Of The Blue to be ELO’s Peppers anyway. I was obsessed with it when it came out!

Helloooo !!! My name is Chrissy. I came across an amazing website for those who love the Beatles and are interested in the paranormal. It’s called Beatlesex. It is chock full of music performed by American Lesley Jane. Lesley, has been channeling/hosting John Lennon since 1985. He also has the honor to be channeling George Harrison since shortly after he passed. No big surprise, since George would most likely go looking for John at that time. They are all making wonderful music together. Please stop by and have a listen:

I find the whole concept fascinating, being a great fan of the paranormal and the Beatles for many years….
Some of the songs do have a parental advisory, so please keep that in mind before playing them. I don’t want to offend anyone.

YES! Love that guy. I’ve heard that How Could You Babe song a lot of times on the radio, it was bombed as a megahit so it got played regularly. Love it. This one sounds great too.

…{Please Please Me – Help !} Beatles Period…
1. The Byrds – You Won’t Have To Cry (A Hard Day’s Night Sound)
(Note: Captured the feel of the Album and Movie)
2. Orient Pearl – Sweet River (Help ! Sound)
(Note: A Filipino band and their Beatlesque tune)
…{Sgt. Pepper – White Album } Beatlesque Period…
Like i said before, anything by Jeff Lynne sounds Beatlesque, but i’ll just name the ones that sound the most Beatlesque IMO. He has to be one of the only songwriters who could capture the sound of The Beatles. ELO captured the sound of the White Album while The Idle Race captured the pure sounds of Sgt. Pepper .
1. ELO – Sweet Is The Night (White Album Sound)
(Note: My own mother fell for this one. She thought it was Lennon singing)
2. The Idle Race – The Sea Of Dreams (Sgt. Pepper Sound)
(Note: Sounds like a song Ringo would sing)
3. ELO – Beatles Forever
(Note: I recently discovered this one. Lynne wrote a song dedicated to his heroes. He was actually embarassed by this. It’s unreleased due to label problems, but you could still find it on Youtube)
4. The Idle Race – Come With Me (Sgt. Pepper Sound)
(Note: A McCartney babble)
5. The Idle Race – Girl At The Window
(Note: Another McCartney sounding tune. Some Beatle references in the lyrics)
For real though, anything Jeff Lynne writes sounds totally like The Beatles. Just follow these links to listen for yourself.
FULL ALBUM The Idle Race – The Birthday Party 1968 FULL ALBUM
FULL ALBUM The Idle Race – Idle Race 1969 FULL ALBUM
FULL ALBUM Electric Light Orchestra – A New World Record 1976 FULL ALBUM
FULL ALBUM Electric Light Orchestra – Out Of The Blue 1977 FULL ALBUM
FULL ALBUM Electric Light Orchestra – Discovery 1969 FULL ALBUM
FULL ALBUM Electric Light Orchestra – Time 1981 FULL ALBUM
Just some extra Beatlesque links.

I’m listening to Deface The Music by Utopia (really just Todd Rundgren himself) and while it’s not absurd-silly in the sense that the Rutles are, it’s still pretty funny, particularly the lyrical inversions. I came across it via this blog post to which I added my 2cents. Obviously all is forgiven now, Todd is a most enthusiastic member of Ringo’s band. All the stylistic parodies are dead-on and worth a listen, and actually helpful because I’m writing my George opus and got a bit stuck.

I read a bit about that Tobias Jesso in “Rolling Stone”…claims that he’s never even heard of Todd Rundgren or Harry Nillsson, which I find a bit surprising.
This always reminded me of a Beatles song for some reason, even though the harmonies aren’t really Beatlish, and the singing is kinda bland overall.
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

This one kinda captured the Magical Mystery Tour and Sgt. Pepper vibe.
Charlie & The Chocolate Factory OST – Veruca Salt
Yes, I know the source sounds kinda off. But it really gives the impression of Psychedelic Pop. You could even hear a Sitar around after the chorus. (Is it?) And of course, the vocal harmonies are Beatle crazy.

I feel that many of the examples posted are also quite good, but, hands down I would have to say The Vinyl Kings’ “A Little Trip” LP (2002) is the closest I’ve ever heard to the beatles-in-their-heyday sound. notable mentions are the opener, “Here We Go Again”, “Chocolate Cake”, “Mind Over Matter”, “What If It Were You”, “Mother Dear”, … aw hell, the whole album is great. The Vinyl King’s are Nashville’s best kept secret. thier follow up LP “Time Machine” (2005) is great as well, but, not as overtly beatlesque. think the beats meet the beach boys meet marvin gaye. you can find their music at cdbaby, discogs, amazon, cd universe, itunes, etc.. 5 STARS
and now … The Vinyl King’s!! youtube.com/watch?v=zXeYynbWpYA

There are actually some old bootlegs from the ’70s that try to pass “Lies” off as an unreleased Beatles song.

What lies!
The guitar from ‘Time‘, by Pink Floyd, always makes me think Beatles-ish. Not the solo– that’s all very Floyd– but those little accents in the verses. And the whole side 2 reminds me of Abbey Road side 2– I keep expecting a Pink Floyd equivalent of Her Majesty at the end.
