Ten producers (Mark Ronson, Arthur Baker, Stuart Price, Paul Epworth, Trevor Horn, Bernard Butler, Jeff Lynne, Daniel Miller, Butch Vig and Nigel Godrich) reflect on Sir George’s influence on them and what they do.

People usually mention George Martin’s influence as producer, but I’ve always really dug his harpsichord solo which he wrote and played in “In My Life ” (begins at about 1:28) — it’s impeccable, down to every last note & flourish.

Thanks Ahhh Girl — lots of interesting details I never knew about. I didn’t know that the solo Martin wrote and played for “In My Life ” was actually on a piano, played slower at half speed, then sped up on tape so it sounds like a harpsichord.
Also more broadly, there are a lot of indications from those descriptions that George Martin contributed much more to some of the songs than I ever knew — particularly “I Am The Walrus ” and “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite”. The descriptions imply that John said something like “just create something vaguely like this, something to do with these vague feelings and images I have. you know what to do” — and Martin went off and applied his own time and creativity to doing just that. If it were only a matter of small things, it wouldn’t be that impressive, but with the two aforementioned songs, it sounds like the aural ambiance which Martin created were crucial elements of them. It’s possible that he was, in effect, co-writer of at least those songs (if not many others).

Is it bad that I did? John was so weird about his voice, I swear he’d have put a jack in his neck if it were possible. I think my favourite thing is George’s invention of flange to explain ADT to John who then made that the term for it. All because John didn’t want to sing twice.

I knew most of those, this is my favorite quotes
“John came up to the control room one day and asked if we could possibly inject his voice directly into the console,” engineer Geoff Emerick said, according to Ultimate Classic Rock. “George replied, ‘Yes, if you go and have an operation. It means sticking a jack-plug into your neck!'”

Philip Norman’s reflections on George Martin. http://www.theguardian.com/mus…..an-beatles
Something I didn’t know already:
In 1963 Martin had a UK No 1 single for 37 weeks out of 52, yet was still on his EMI salary of £3,000 a year. To add insult to injury, a recent minor pay-rise disqualified him from that year’s staff Christmas bonus.
Here’s an interesting observation (from Norman’s first meeting with GM in 1979):
Martin by then was long past his Beatle-producing days – with him, unlike them, there were no lasting scars –

Thanks for the mention, @Ron Nasty. For whatever reason, his passing saddened me even though he was 90 and had lived a long, full life. I’ve spent the days since listening to the Beatles and paying particular attention to the production and recording qualities…still sounds brilliant after all these years and all these listens.

Sir George Martin’s funeral was held yesterday at All Saints Church in Coleshill, Wiltshire, and was a private ceremony attended by a small amount of close friends and family members.
