There’s a scene in The Rutles with a woman playing Brian Epstein’s mother. She’s asked what attracted her son to the band, and she innocently remarks that it was their tight trousers, blithely unaware that she’s referencing his homosexuality, of which she seems to know nothing.
I’ve been told that this gag is inspired by an actual interview with Mrs. Epstein. Is that right? If so, what exactly does she say that inspired the joke?

I don’t think it’s so much the gag, @stuartgardner, but more that the scene was based on a ’70s interview with Queenie Epstein, of which only a short clip can be found on the interweb:
