I didn’t the Bowie for the person who wanted it. Lucky you, WeepingAtlasCedars. They are selling on ebay now for about $70+.  <snip>

Wow. Good thing I got mine when I did! a-hard-days-night-ringo-6 (I only paid around thirty-something for mine at the store.)

For my household, we will be listening to the Bee Gees, Elvis, and the ?? (mystery) RSD 7-inch album. Both of the clerks at the record store asked me if I wanted to know what the ?? was or if I wanted to wait and be surprised when I opened it. I opted for the surprise route. They both were grinning from ear-to-ear and said that it was by far their favorite record put out today. Guess I’ll find out in a bit what it is.

Well?

I don’t really understand the appeal of RSD. Labels put out expensive limited editions of things you probably already own. People buy them because they’re rare (and many get resold immediately on eBay because they’re rare). It seems like a licence to print money, much of which goes back to the major labels. Yes, it supports local independent stores but why not buy something you don’t already have, instead of a cynically-released reissue?

Joe said
The Long Tall Sally EP is being reissued for RSD in the US (28 November). Apparently it’s limited to 7,000 copies.

I don’t get it either. Especially when you can buy the original Long Tall Sally EP w/sleeve for a decent price on Ebay and other places.

Now the original Love Me Do single is a little different. That 1962 single goes for an arm and leg, so buying a reissue is a much cheaper alternative.

Of course, I had to have the real thing, so don’t tell my wife how much I paid…….a-hard-days-night-paul-7

Life has gotten in the way of us listening to the ?? Mystery record. If we don’t get around to it tonight, we will tomorrow night. You shall know the artist(s) and song(s) by the end of the week.

So, I got a first pressing of Jethro Tull’s Thick As A Brick for $5 on Record Store Day!  It’s got the full, 12-page newspaper and everything!  I also got a copy of Live Peace In Toronto for $6, and a reproduction of Queen II for $15.  I didn’t get any of the RSD exclusives, but I really wanted that Alternate Tusk…a-hard-days-night-john-4

I got here at 5:15 in the morning, and I am about 20th in line at the record store for Record Store Day. I hope they have enough Beatles records so I can get one.

It’s a sign. 20th in line. I’m going for the Penny Lane /Strawberry Fields record. It was 20 years ago today…

Claypool/Lennon sounds a little like Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd. Its pretty solid, the first time I found myself enjoying Sean Lennon’s music.

I’ve had a pretty great Record Store Day.  Of course, I got my Strawberry Fields Forever /Penny Lane single on this fine April day.  The new mix is pretty good!paul-mccartney-thumb_gif

I really, really wanted the 90125 picture disc, but they were all out when I got there (which was around 7:30 AM).  I did get weird the ELP flexi-disc thingy though.

They aren’t RSD exclusive releases, but I also got The Flaming Lips’ Soft Bulletin, Genesis’ Foxtrot, and Radiohead’s Ok Computer on vinyl.  I’m listening to the latter as I type this, and uh, wow.  How have I never heard this album before?  It’s great!a-hard-days-night-george-9

I got to the store at about 10:30, and for some reason still managed to get what I was looking for! Of course I nabbed the SFF/PL single (they only had one left in the back! a-hard-days-night-ringo-6), and I got myself the Pink Floyd Interstellar Overdrive 12″. I also picked up (not RSD release) Pet Sounds on CD. a-hard-days-night-george-9

I don’t think the shop I go to does this whole Record Store Day thing, and plus I still owe £7 from buying DSOTM two weeks ago! paul-mccartney

I got to my local store at 4am. I was tenth in line. The shop opened at 8am and the people in line were pretty nice, plus the cafe opposite gave us free tea and coffee. Just as well, because I couldn’t sleep the night before and was functioning on two hours’ sleep. Blech.

I do like the Monolith of Phobos. The CLD do a version of Tomorrow Never Knows live – several versions are on YT, here’s one:

I didn’t get the SFA single, because I have an original from the 90s. I got quite a bit of other stuff though. I couldn’t resist the SFF/PL reissue, even though it was expensive (£15). I also got Andre 3000’s cover of All Together Now , which was quite a bit cheaper (and the last copy in the shop). Dare you to listen to this without smiling:

As for albums, I picked up two David Bowies – BOWPROMO (alternative Hunky Dory mixes) and Cracked Actor (live 1974). I’ve only listened to the latter so far. I also picked up represses of the first Elastica album, Nilsson Schmilsson and Joe Meek’s I Hear A New World.

I could have got the Flowers In The Dirt demos but I don’t have a tape deck.

Oh, was that Fuzzy Logic? I don’t think that was a RSD release over here – it came out last year. I bought my copy back in 1996! Got it signed by Gruff Rhys a few years later.

For this year’s Black Friday version of Record Store Day…

Paul McCartney is releasing a couple different 7-inch vinyl versions of a new recording of “Wonderful Christmastime ” with The Roots. The b-sides, depending on which edition you get, are a Norah Jones performance of “Peace” or a The Decemberists cover of “Jesus Christ.”

Ravi Shanker has an album on the list.

It should be noted that there are also two other Beatles-related releases: –

The Smithereens: B-Sides The Beatles [Record Store Day first – 1200 copies]

Smithereens-Beatles-B.jpgImage Enlarger

It’s no secret that The Smithereens grew up listening to The Beatles. They paid homage to the group’s landmark Capitol debut album by lovingly re-recording Meet The Beatles in its entirety. This time The Smithereens dug through their treasure of early Beatles singles and selected a dozen of Beatles B-sides. Originally released on vinyl in January of 2009 as a 2 disc set combined with Meet The Beatles, which has been out of print for five years. This marks the first vinyl stand-alone release for this part. For Beatle fans everywhere the final kick to this unique package is the orange and yellow swirl vinyl which was the original color combination for the label on the Capitol Records Beatles singles.

A1 Thank You Girl A2 There’s A Place A3 I’ll Get You A4 You Can’t Do That A5 Ask Me Why A6 Cry For A Shadow
B1 P.S. I Love You B2 I’m Happy Just To Dance With You B3 If I Fell B4 Slow Down B5 I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party B6 Some Other Guy

and the various artists jazz-improvisation double-album A Day in the Life: Impressions of Pepper [Record Store Day first – 2000 copies]

Impressions-of-Pepper.jpgImage Enlarger

Some of today’s most meaningful up and coming and established jazz artists pay homage to the iconic Beatles record “Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band”. Musicians were given the challenge to create loose interpretation of these classic songs, and the result is impressionistic, original, avant-garde takes on legendary tracks like “With A Little Help From My Friends “, “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds “, “Getting Better “, and “A Day In The Life “.

I’ve unfortunately not been able to take part in any RSD celebrations, but I have been building up my collection. Here are some of my recent buys:

Cannonball Adderley – Somethin’ Else (Jazz)
Kraftwerk – The Man Machine (Synthpop Pioneers)
Mount Eerie – Now Only (Folk)
Bob Dylan – Blood on the Tracks (Folk rock)
Car Seat Headrest – Twin Fantasy (Garage rock, lo-fi)
A Tribe Called Quest – People’s Instinctive Travels (Jazz rap, boom bap)
My Bloody Valentine – Loveless (Shoegaze, dream pop, noise rock)

I also managed to pick up free (but used) copies of Jimi Hendrix Experience’s ‘Smash Hits’ compilation (came with a really cool poster of Jimi and the band posing horseback as cowboys) and Stevie Wonder’s I Was Made to Love Her.

I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.
