What about versions; for instance does ‘Let It Be ‘ count as 1 regardless of it being George Martin’s mix or Phil Spector’s.
‘Love Me Do ‘ by UK release, going by memory and picking a song randomly, is on
A-side single b/w ‘P.S. I Love You’ (1962, 1992, 2012 – 1982 was not a reissue as it had never been deleted)
‘Red Album ‘
‘Rarities’
‘Past Masters ‘
‘Anthology 1 ‘
’20 Greatest Hits’
‘1”
‘Beatles Box’
‘Beatles Hit’s’ (E.P)
‘E.P. Collection’ (both vinyl and CD)
It’s also now out of copyright and can be added to any album release which bulks up the number by about a hundred at least.
‘I Want To Hold Your Hand ‘ may be a possibility as it was on ‘Oldies But Goldies’, ‘Hollywood Bowl’, and a ‘George Martin’ box set, never mind a gazillion Beatles Greatest Hits and Best Of’s around the world and nearly all of the ones in the list above, with a couple of detail changes like ‘BBC 2’.

I think I read somewhere briefly that people were surprised at how John looked when Sgt. Pepper was released. Is this true? Had they not seen any of the Beatles for such a long period of time that he had really changed that much?

Interesting question, i’d never heard that people were suprised with how John Lennon changed in 1967 but I can see why this would have been the case. Looking at all four of the Beatles in 1966 compared to 1967, I would say that John had the starkest change (see below).
John in 1966
John in 1967
Following Revolver and the end of touring, the Beatles basically had a little break before reclusing to the studio to begin work on Sgt. Pepper . During this time people rarely heard from them, let alone saw them. There were however a few exceptions though (see below).
In terms of John Lennon , from Autumn 1966 onwards he begin work on his role in the 1967 film How I Won the War. It was during this time that he began wearing the famous ‘granny’ glasses and changing to the hairstyle synonymous with Sgt. Pepper . He had also lost a lot of weight and so looked a lot skinnier. The film wasn’t released until October 1967, so quite a few months after Sgt. Pepper .
I wouldn’t say that they hadn’t seen the Beatles in a ‘long’ period of time, but it was certainly the longest time since the start of Beatlemania. Also John did change his appearance fairly significantly in quite a short space of time. So yes, it must have been quite a shock when people saw the first photos of John when the promotion of Sgt. Pepper began.

I know that The Beatles have written recording notes that mention personnel for some songs, such as the notes for The Ballad Of John And Yoko and George Martin’s handwritten notes from the Help ! sessions but how often did they write recording notes that mention personnel and where can i find all of them.

Also, I’ve been wondering this for a while: Does anyone know what sort of pedals/effects the Beatles used on their guitars? I know about a few of them, such as George using a volume pedal on Yes It Is and I Need You , and his much-loved putting the guitar through a Leslie speaker cabinet, but I’ve not read much else. Thanks

For their gain effects, The Beatles typically just turned the gain up on their amps to get a natural overdrive. However, a few songs, most notably Paul’s Rickenbacker bass on Think For Yourself and Happiness Is A Warm Gun use a Maestro Fuzz Tone. Revolution has the lads plug right into the mixer, bypassing amps entirely.
George often used a Leslie speaker, most notably with his Gibson Les Paul on Something , he also used a wah pedal on Across The Universe .
Tremolo was built into their amps.

Thanks for the answers, @Shamrock Womlbs and @Dark Overlord. I didn’t think they were into extensive effects boards like today’s musicians seem to think is absolutely necessary… this is encouraging to me

Didn’t George also use the King Vox-Wah pedal across the January 1969 sessions, and into the Abbey Road sessions, @Dark Overlord?

The only song that i hear a wah on is Across The Universe .
By the way, i forgot to mention this earlier (i had a couple of brief power surges so i rushed through my post) but George uses a volume pedal on I Need You (Rickenbacker 360/12), Love You To , Here, There, And Everywhere, and the rhythm guitar to Tomorrow Never Knows . I’m pretty sure that John was manually turning the knobs on George’s Gretsch although correct me if i’m wrong.

Do you have the full set of January 1969 recordings? There is no way to hear them without thinking he is liberally using his wah pedal, and he even wrote a song based on his use of the pedal during the sessions.

Let me rephrase, out of the songs on Please Please Me , With The Beatles , A Hard Day’s Night , Beatles For Sale , Help !, Rubber Soul , Revolver , Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Capitol Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine , The Beatles, Abbey Road , Let It Be , and or Past Masters , the only one where i hear a wah pedal is on Across The Universe , where George uses one with his Gibson SG.

And let me ask again, do you have the complete January 1969 sessions? It is a simple yes or no. If the answer is no, then you’re offering an answer without the full details necessary to answer.

No, i don’t have the complete January 1969 sessions, the only people who have heard those in full are The Beatles, Mal Evans, Neil Aspinall, George Martin, Mark Lewisohn, and maybe 2 or 3 other people, definitely not ordinary citizens like you and me. I was just stating that as far as the Apple canon goes, the only song where i hear a wah is on Across The Universe , i can’t speak for Carnival Of Light or any other song that i haven’t heard before.

Sorry to disappoint you but I, and many others, have over 90 hours of January 1969 sessions, Twickenham and Savile Row. If you do not have those sessions, you’re in no position to comment on George’s use of a wah pedal, and should admit that hole in your knowledge.

I am also one of those who have listened. George is constantly using the Wah pedal, especially on songs that he was writing, most notably to cool sounding intro to All Things Must Pass that he played using the Wah pedel. He also wrote Wah Wah during this time, which has a riff built around that pedal.
But I’m mainly here to second Ron Nasty in that he used the pedal extensively during the January 1969 rehearsals.
