Hello all. My name is Jim Beviglia and I operate a blog called Countdown Kid. I’ve recently begun a Retro Review series on the albums of Paul McCartney ; the latest post is on Pipes Of Peace , but you can go back through the archives to find the older albums (I’m doing them chronologically.) These posts are a way of promoting my new book, Counting Down The Beatles: Their 100 Finest Songs, which comes out next month. I hope you’ll check the posts out; I’ll post to this board whenever I do a new one. (I’ll be following the McCartney series with ones on John Lennon , George Harrison and then The Beatles as a group.) And maybe it will spur your interest in the book, which is the fourth I’ve written, following ones on Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and The Rolling Stones. The link to the blog is below. Hope you enjoy and hope to hear some feedback. Thanks!

I enjoyed reading these eloquent reviews, although I’m sure @William Shears Campbell will disagree with you about Pipes Of Peace and Tug Of War . I hope you post some of your reviews to the pages set up on the forum for the Beatles and solo albums.

@countdownkid. Have merged your two threads together to make one and moved them here. The list is pinned to the top, you can update it as you go on so folk don’t have to scroll down to have to navigate to each review; all new posts will be as normal.

11. “Long Haired Lady”- One clunker out of twelve (if you count the two versions of “Ram On ”) ain’t bad. This just goes on and on without much direction, and putting Linda out front on the vocals didn’t do her any favors.
First album, first posting of yours I read and I already disagree.
Great song!

Agreed with everything but 1 and 11.

@countdownkid Very nice writing. I’m with you 100% on Monkberry Moon Delight , but by and large have the songs in opposite order on London Town . “Deliver Your Children” is my favorite on that album, and “Don’t Let It Bring You Down” is satisfyingly meditative. “Girlfriends” hurts my ears.
As you’ll find if you haven’t already, major McCartney fans are in complete disagreement when it comes to separating the wheat from the chaff.
I’m guessing you’ve read “Here, There, and Everywhere – the 100 Best Beatle Songs”?

Thanks for the kind words, and no worries about the disagreement, that’s part of the fun.
I am aware of that book and have browsed it quickly in a book store, although I haven’t read it. The Beatles book is the fourth book I’ve done in the Counting Down series, following takes on Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and The Rolling Stones, so it’s not like I’m piggybacking on anything. In addition, my format is a bit different than the Here, There And Everywhere approach. First of all, mine are ranked in descending order, which allows you to preserve the suspense if you want. Second, where Here, There And Everywhere consists of more what I would call trivia about the songs, my book contains an essay on each song that is more critically-inclined. Below is a link to an exceprt from my Rolling Stones book, to give you an idea of what The Beatles book will look like. I should have an excerpt from the Beatles book to provide later this week. I hope you check it out; it’s available for purchase now online. Thanks.
