Not entirely accurate, @Beatlebug. They were awarded their MBEs in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List on 12 June. 50 years ago today was when they collected them from the Palace.

Yes, @Beatlebug.
It may seem like nitpicking, but 50 years ago today was effectively when they did the paperwork. All the fuss over them getting the MBE, with old soldiers returning their medals etc., happened back in June.

The day The Beatles played Cardiff – memories of the Liverpool legends’ Welsh date 50 years ago by Liz Day
Fifty years ago today Cardiff went wild as The Beatles played at the Capitol Theatre to thousands of screaming fans. More than 25,000 people had applied for tickets but only 5,000 were available for two back-to-back shows at the venue in Queen Street. According to a report in the South Wales Echo from the time the queue of fans stretched right down Queen Street and into Churchill Way for several hundred metres. More than 40 police officers were on duty in and around the venue and the reporter saw bouncers having “small scuffles” with fans.
John Lennon , Paul McCartney , George Harrison and Ringo Starr were photographed placing a doll on top of the venue’s Christmas tree before doors opened at 5.30pm.
According to the Echo’s report: “The 2,500-strong audience screamed, shouted and stood on their seats during the whole time the Beatles were on stage.”
McCartney performed Yesterday solo on an electric organ.
The band’s road manager Mr Evans said: “A man ran on the stage while John was announcing the group’s next number – Day Tripper – and grappled with the lads. “He was asked to leave and disappeared as quickly as quickly as he came. This sort of thing has happened before and we are able to handle it.”
The show on Sunday, December 12, 1965, turned out to be their last in Cardiff and one of their last in Britain. After this date they played live on just two more occasions in the UK – an NME concert in May 1966 and the famous rooftop show at Apple in January 1969.

I know BBC Radio Wales were also making a programme about this concert. I’m not sure if it’s gone out yet.

There’s also a BBC web page on the show, written by me! (it looks like the Wales Online journalist read it too – hers ends very similarly): http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/mus…..1212.shtml

Fifty years ago today saw the publication of the most famous edition of Datebook ever published:
Looking at it now, it’s perhaps surprising there wasn’t more reaction to Paul’s comment on the US, as being the cover star and heading the cover quotes, it seems Datebook considered Paul’s comment the more offensive.

Isn’t Paul’s comment a statement on how black people were viewed and treated in the US at the time and not his own thoughts? It does and could be taken the other way easily tho and was probably intended to be viewed as highly offensive at the time.

Here’s the full quote from the Maureen Cleave interview:
They have hardly any plays on television in America. Here we have lots of plays; you hear people say, “I like a good play.” Well, in America, like in 1984, plays are out of the dictionary. They have willed themselves into this.
It makes me sad for them. And it’s a lousy country where anyone who is black is made to seem a dirty n*gger. There is a statue of a good Negro doffing his hat and being polite in the gutter. I saw a picture of it.
We look at things a lot better over here; we have millions of little societies preserving things. We have little societies to preserve barrels of beer and little John Betjeman societies and little ban-the-bomb societies.
He does appear to be giving his personal opinion on how he saw America at the time.

I think my point in saying I was surprised it didn’t get more reaction is that, here’s Paul, at the height of the Civil Rights struggle, on the eve of US tour, being quoted as, more-or-less, describing America as a “lousy country” because of its racism.

Its quite a statement. Not many people nowadays would someone be that outspoken about a country and its racism, especially if a major tour there was planned.
