From Houston Press via Reddit: 10 Fun Facts About the Beatles’ Ed Sullivan debut. Probably things most here know, but I didn’t know about the Playboy Club bit. Wonder which of the three Beatle(s) did The Twist, as I can’t imagine all of them participating.

I can envision Paul twisting for sure. Ringo’s game for most anything. George wasn’t as closed off as he would be later on, and under the influence, who knows? So that would leave John, who always tried to act too cool for the room. He’d be my non-Twist pick, but I wouldn’t be shocked if I was wrong on that.

Did George go or did he go back to the hotel, since he had been ill the day before? I could check but don’t have the books.

Ah, the article gives the answer

Local radio DJ Murray The K took the three Beatles who weren’t running a dangerous fever to the famous Playboy Club.

So George wasn’t there (according to that article).

After dinner at the Playboy Club, they went on to the Peppermint Lounge. This photo shows George and Louise at the table in the bottom left.

So, if George did go back to the hotel, he came out again.

You would think we could get an accurate cohesive chain of events report on the activities of George on that day and night, there were enough people about.

There’s a dvd called The Beatles First US Visit (or something like that) and there’s a segment of The Beatles at the Peppermint Lounge with Ringo dancing with some girls as well as Murray the K strutting his stuff. Dancing to the house band’s rendition of Money (That’s What I want) nonetheless.

The Nation have reprinted an essay from 50 years ago by Alan Rinzler, one of those rather sniffy appraisals of their arrival in America, along with his thoughts about what he wrote 50 years later: “There’s nothing in it about the Beatles that I agree with now…”

I was thinking, over the next few months (years), there’s bound to be many threads started saying this, that, or the other, happened 50 years ago today… So I thought I would pre-empt and try creating a thread for all…

So, here is the first entry, it was 50 years ago today that The Beatles first American album was released. No, not Meet The Beatles, which would not be released until 20 January, but the first version Vee-Jay’s Introducing The Beatles.

File:IntroducingtheBeatles.jpgImage Enlarger

It wasn’t a totally legal album, as Vee-Jay had had their license to release Beatles material withdrawn over non-payment of royalties due to cash-flow problems in August 1963. They looked at what was happening, saw some much needed income coming their way, and thought, “Feck it! We’ll deal with the legal problems later! We need the money!”

It was basically the Please Please Me album with Please Please Me  and Ask Me Why  removed (as well as the count-in to I Saw Her Standing There  apart from the “four”). Six days after release, Vee-Jay would receive their first stop order. Capitol’s publishing subsidiary Beechwood Music Inc. owned the rights to Love Me Do  and PS I Love You , and declared Vee-Jay had no right to issue them.

On the 10 February Introducing The Beatles would be re-released, with Please Please Me  and Ask Me Why  replacing Love Me Do  and PS I Love You Vee-Jay would eventually reach an agreement that allowed them six months to capitalise on the material – which saw album after album released using the same twelve tracks.

I’m probably really late on this, but I just saw this topic… I was lucky enough to find both a mono and stereo version of that album, and the track listings were different, so I have all 14 songs from Please Please Me !

Apparently it is the most counterfeited album ever, and there are a bunch of tests you can do to determine whether it’s fake or not, and while the stereo failed miserably, there’s nothing to indicate that the mono is a fake so I assume it’s real!

The tests and more info on the album (it’s really very interesting) can be found here.

If I spoke prose you'd all find out, I don't know what I talk about.

And the wax points to why Paul is dead! Because Wax melts! It’s all put together in Faul’s 2007 song, House Of Wax!

This is for tomorrow.

How the Fab Four high-fived the Hot 100

In one magical decade, The Beatles made records built to last an eternity. The same might be said for the band’s chart records.

Friday marks the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four’s remarkable Billboard coup, when their songs occupied the top five slots of the singles chart, a feat never repeated.

The Billboard Hot 100 ranking on April 4, 1964:

1. Can’t Buy Me Love

2. Twist And Shout

3. She Loves You

4. I Want To Hold Your Hand

5. Please Please Me

More at the link.

Today, fifty years ago, they were filming one of my favorite parts of A Hard Day’s Night , the Ringo River Scene!

Which reminds me I have to steel myself for another foray against the spiders in the garage to look for my two Lennon books.

Some of them are redbacks so I have to be a touch careful …

Oh my, good luck. Wear gloves. One of those had the misfortune of climbing down from the ceiling in the kitchen during my spring cleaning and fell right into a burner. In a panic, I shrieked and turned on the fire. Instant fricasseed spider.

*ahem* Back to the topic, I have the book on my To Read list.

How many of you (us) will be around to post “It was 100 years ago today”? I’d be 95/96 that year if I were to live that long.

I wonder how many threads and posts this site will have by then? Will we know who sang the ahhhhhs by then? Will the McCartney archive remaster project be done by then?

Will we need to be here to discuss it? Maybe we will be able to communictate to everyone and anyone without the need to be online, some kind of thought communication.

Ooooo, built in bluetooth in our heads. Can we choose who we want to share our thoughts with – and which thoughts? How close in proximity do the two people have to be? mmm, do you really want to know what is going on in my head? I’d take a peek into yours – hey, why not? Will hackers figure out a way for people to get into each others heads without their permission? John might finally have gotten the answer to whether anyone is in his tree or not.

Bad, AG. I would have cut and pasted this into the impossible to derail thread, but this editor on my phone won’t do that a-hard-days-night-ringo-14paul-mccartney, so I’m leaving the post here.

Copyright and personal privacy will long have been abolished due to claims of having to protect people against others. We will be free to do as we wish, think as we wish etc just as soon as we have agreed it with the authorities – better join the underground movement if you disagree. You will be able to communicate with anyone on the same planet.

Not sure i want to get inside your head AG, the ask Paul thread has me running scared. I’ll have emigrated by then and have my own little colony far from the prying minds of humanity, having finally been convinced that mankind has finally lost the plot and all hope is lost for it to be rediscovered.
