I am not quite sure where to put this answer as I don’t know where this question cropped up, however… this thread seems as good a place as any.
Referencing a New York Post article,
Ahhh Girl said (via email)
Everything else says George didn’t go to the Sullivan rehearsal. In this article his sister says he did.
We need our ultimate fact checker on this.
This surprised me and I have been checking as many sources as possible, including earlier interviews with Louise.
Now, this is definitely a new one on me, and not — that I am aware of — a version that Louise has told before.
Her version here disagrees with all the evidence.
And the NYTimes article you reference has other mistakes as well. Jane Asher travelling with Paul is a new one on me, and if she did she was extremely well hidden.
Here is my understanding.
They flew into New York on the 7th. It was quickly realised George was quite ill, and a call was put out to Louise, who arrived at some stage on the 8th — there is some dispute about just how early in the day she got to the Plaza.
For the majority of the rehearsal, which was for camera angles, Neil Aspinall stood in for George. For a part of it, Vince Calandra (a CBS employee) stood in as Neil was called back to the hotel. According to Calandra this was because Louise was not being allowed into the hotel.
On the morning of the 9th, there was another rehearsal, where Neil again stood in. This is all well documented by photographers, and no photograph claims to show George at the CBS Studios before the afternoon taping of their third appearance on the show.
Whatever Louise’s revised account of this weekend fifty years ago says, press access was not restricted, as shown by the amount of photographs that exist, and yet none show George there before the afternoon of the 9th.
I do hope this helps.
Here are some of the rehearsal photographs, which all show a distinct lack of George:
And with Vince standing in after Neil had had to go back to the hotel:
When somebody comes up with a photograph of George there on the 8th, I’ll tip my hat to Louise for telling us something new, but he is absent from every photograph known to have been that day.

John C Winn writes in Way Beyond Compare (this book is a great reference) that on the 8th February “George illness didn’t keep him down for long. By afternoon’s end he was well enough to travel to the CBS studio to pose for publicity photos with the Beatles and Ed Sullivan.”.

I agree that there are some claims that George was there at least briefly on the 8th, I am yet to see a definitive photograph – and you would think that had he turned up for a photocall on the 8th, there would be many – that show him there. I have searched, and I cannot find one picture of him at CBS that is definitely dated to the 8th.
Louise, however, has him taking part in the rehearsal, which is patently wrong.
The majority claims for all four Beatles and Ed Sullivan, is that they are from the afternoon of the 9th, preceding the taping of their third appearance.

Thanks, mja and mmm. Perhaps Louise will address this in her book.?.?
EDIT: here’s a link to the article in question. I didn’t want to put it into the “The Beatles arrive in New York City today” thread so as to not break the “happening then” spirit of that thread.

Sorry! As has been pointed out to me, when I said New York Times (NYTimes) I meant, as I said at the start, the New York Post. My fingers got confused between the two when typing!

There are also photographs dated to the 9th that have George wearing that rollneck. I believe those are taken just before George goes to change into shirt and tie for the afternoon taping of the third appearance on the “really big shew”!
But as I have said, it is possible that he appeared for a few minutes on the 8th, though sources disagree. With all that photographs of them taken during their camera rehearsal with Neil and Vince, there is no possibility in my mind that he was rushed there for that, as Louise claims.

From the Beatles Monthly April 1964 page 7 “What Happened In America” by your Beatles Book Reporter
“Inside studios, masses of news-men waiting, holding up the producer on rehearsals, Beatles had to become members of trade union AFRA first, filling in appropriate forms. Neil Aspinall stood in for George Harrison on run-through. Later George made dramatic recovery, arrived at studio greeted by cheers and applause from technicians, newsmen and Ed Sullivan.”
Also is there any record of a press photo shoot on the 9th? I’ve read about Dress and Camera rehearsals, The Beatles talking with the sound guys about the mixing, and the shooting of the 3rd show but nothing about the Beatles posing for publicity pictures with Ed as has been dated for the 8th.

the Lennon Facebook page had this image and caption yesterday:
John, Paul, and Ringo with Brian Epstein and Ed Sullivan, presumably taken Feb 8th while George was back at the hotel.
So, I wonder if that means they are thinking George wasn’t there at all or if he had already been there and left?
This episode/mystery is finally making me feel like a total Beatles geek. It is fantastic!

Just like to point out that Ed is wearing the same tie and Ringo the same suit as the pics with George posted above as it looks like are John and Paul. Are we now saying the Beatles and Ed recreated the photo shoot the next day wearing the same clothes? It could be that some photo’s were taken before GH arrived.

Well, Ed’s tie on the 9th doesn’t appear any different to me.
True. But doesn’t mean that it couldn’t be on the 8th anyway.
So what are your thoughts on the entry in the Beatles Monthly quoted above? We now have the official Beatles magazine at the time reporting that George was there on the 8th, arriving later on.

Put the question out over at the Bootlegzone Forum and i got a reply from John C Winn none the less. He pointed me to Michael Braun’s Love Me Do book, which was his source.
On page 103 Braun writes
“The Beatles, with Aspinall standing in for George, rehearsed only for camera angles and whispered their songs. This was rather disappointing for Kathy and Nancy Cronkite – the daughters of the CBS newsman, Walter Cronkite – who had been admitted to the the studio to watch the rehearsal. . . Towards the end of the afternoon George turned up for the rehearsal. The press was assured that he would be able to take part in the show the next evening. “He’d better be,” said Sullivan, “or i’ll put a wig on myself”.
After the rehearsal they went to the Savoy-Hilton where George spent nine-hundred dollars on a twelve string guitar”.”
I feel very giddy getting a reply from John C Winn, love his books.
