Hi all,
I have a question that if anyone can solve, I think it’s you lovely people here.
A long time ago, I’m convinced I read a quote by who I think was Lennon, on amateur songwriting – which was (perhaps paraphrased):
“If you want to write a song, take a song you like. Change the words, then change the melody.”
Was this a quote of theirs? If it was, here’s your bonus round for sincere extra points:
Is there any video footage of Lennon (or whichever beloved Beatle it may have been) actually saying it himself?
With salutations!

I’m not sure if that’s a Lennon quote, but George did that with Dylan’s Sad-Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands for his song Long Long Long.
"The pump don't work cause the vandals took the handles!"
-Bob Dylan, Subterranean Homesick Blues
"We could ride and surf together while our love would grow"
-Brian Wilson, Surfer Girl

Thanks for this. Bumping one time in case anyone knows, otherwise I’ll have to leave it be. I wanted to use the footage for a project, but it seems that it’s hard to prove Lennon ever said it, let alone see him doing it on video.
