I'm not sure if this is proof, but this is pretty funny.
Ad hoc, ad loc, and quid pro quo! So little time! So much to know!

I don't have the answer to the original question, but Yoko Ono answers questions asked of her via Twitter on Fridays. She selects 20-30 and posts them on the Imagine Peace website, eg http://imaginepeace.com/archives/7703
That's probably the easiest way of finding out what John smoked, though she may not pick your q – she ignored mine, about a bit in the 1970 Rolling Stone interview where she said she was planning to record an album of Lennon-McCartney songs; I asked if anything was ever recorded. I'd love to know the answer.
Other than that her Twitter account is pretty much a collection of Grapefruit-style meaningless aphorisms about positive thinking and peace, best avoided unless your bullshit meter is set to tolerant.
Oops, went off on a bit of a tangent there. Sorry!
Can buy me love! Please consider supporting the Beatles Bible on Amazon

Philip Norman claims John chain-smoked Gitanes ciggies. They were “super cool” in the 70s. French ciggies. He-who-should-not-be-mentioned claims in his “book” that John smoked Gauloise, another brand of trendy French ciggies.
It would be interesting if Yoko did answer this question… my vote goes with Norman.

I also read that in “I Met the Walrus” by Jerry Levitan. I'm sure he made some mention of an ashtray overflowing with French cigarette butts or something to that effect, I'll take a look again!
Tongue, lose thy light. Moon, take thy flight… see ya, George!

Like this? Buy Lark cigarettes
Actually I was thinking it would be more fun having a Beatles scavenger hunt. Anyone game?

I'd probably buy a pack purely for the significance!
Though I can just imagine the look on my mum's face when they would arrive in the mail!
Paul's face seems to suffice yet again:
And sounds like fun, Skye!
