Something . I love the fact that it’s shot in colour, unlike Help . I also love the fact that the Beatles partners are in the video (Patti in particular looks stunning in it), and the bit I always remember from the video is Ringo on the bike,it made me laugh when I first saw it ahdn_ringo_09.

What’s Paul’s masterpiece if you had to choose one, and why? Yesterday or Hey Jude ?

Hmm…. I think Yesterday is the more perfect song, and indicative of Paul’s skill as a craftsman, so I’ll answer your question with that. But personally, I choose to listen to Hey Jude much more often.

Extended musical codas: Hey Jude or I Want You (She’s So Heavy)?

Father McKenzie

I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

I want you (she’s so heavy). Because less is more. And also has a great guitar solo, and that Latin-esque section… and John screaming… + the final crescendo is super cool…

I’m Down or Don’t let me down?

I’m Down .  I like how, similar to Help ,the lyrics are quite downbeat and depressive, yet the tune is quite upbeat. I like that, thought it was clever. McCartney’s vocal is brilliant also.

Pick your favourite album cover from these two: A Hard Day’s Night or the Blue Album ?

A Hard Day’s Night . I spent hours poring over the little faces when I got the album, I just think it’s so clever and amusing and simple at the same time.

Plus, it produced ALL THESE GREAT SMILEYS! a-hard-days-night-john-1a-hard-days-night-john-3a-hard-days-night-john-7a-hard-days-night-john-6a-hard-days-night-paul-3a-hard-days-night-paul-8a-hard-days-night-paul-5ahdn_paul_06ahdn_paul_01a-hard-days-night-paul-4a-hard-days-night-george-9a-hard-days-night-george-10ahdn_george_05ahdn_george_08ahdn_george_01a-hard-days-night-george-4ahdn_george_06a-hard-days-night-ringo-12a-hard-days-night-ringo-7a-hard-days-night-ringo-10ahdn_ringo_09a-hard-days-night-ringo-11

It Don’t Come Easy: Ringo’s version or George’s?

George. I don’t think it’s a great song and the outtake therefore gives more interest to myself as it’s not the standard.

I’m Only Sleeping. I always love the guitar work in it, and John’s voice is full of psychedelic feelings and greatly fascinating.

Sunny songs: I’ll Follow The Sun or Here Comes The Sun ?

I’m going to go with I’ll Follow The Sun right now as I’m off Abbey Road until 26 September. (Yes, it’s difficult.) a-hard-days-night-paul-7

Rainy (solo) songs: Mamunia or Blow Away?

Hmm… I love George, but I have a lot of pleasant childhood memories associated with Mamunia.

Mamunia. Along with Country Dreamer it’s how I got deep into Paul’s solo catalogue.

TWBG got there before me.

Here Comes The Sun . How could it not be – and I adore Here Comes The Moon.

Dream Away or Blow Away?

Blow Away. Much more personally meaningful to me and I just generally like it better.

Tropical-ish Harrison albums: Gone Troppo or the eponymous album?

George Harrison   by default. I haven’t actually heard Gone Troppo , but George Harrison is f a b u l o u s and mind-blowingly amazing so– that.

Multi-disc albums: ATMP or The Beatles?

ATMP . SOrry a-hard-days-night-ringo-14

It’s a hard choice as both albums have so many songs I couldn’t live without, but I just prefer the flow and atmosphere of ATMP .

Posthumous a-hard-days-night-paul-10 releases: Brainwashed or Milk And Honey ?

Ringo. It’s early on in ‘62 and all I can think of with of George in ‘67 is his moustache and no.

Pete Best drumming on Love Me Do or Andy White drumming on Please Please Me ?

Pete Best on LMD. If he hadn’t done so badly playing it, we wouldn’t have Ringo (harsh, but true).

Cymbal. Cymbals are healthier than sandwiches.
