Ooh, I joined the thread at the right moment.
A Day In The Life is an absolute masterpiece, but I’m going to go with Strawberry Fields Forever . Every single element of that song teems with this weird, experimental energy. The mellotron at the beginning is hazy and nostalgic, and immediately takes me to suburban Liverpool on a boiling hot summer morning, where the air does that shimmery mirage thing. The guitar that accompanies this section is perfect too, it’s so understated and melodic.
Then the song takes a turn into insanity with those rough, scratchy cellos that sound like the music Eleanor Rigby set on fire. I love the combination of the dark, mysterious lyric ‘nothing is real’ with those discordant horns and Ringo’s drumming. This part of the song reminds me of the woods near my grandmother’s house where my siblings used to play when we were little – every corner revealed something new and unexpected.
Across The Universe or Julia ?

Good matchup, both have pretty, unusual chords and delicate vocal. “Julia ” to me derives much of its inherent importance from its subject matter, and from its status as John’s only solo performance. I find it kinda enigmatic, Yokoish. “Across The Universe ” is an attempt to portray TM in music, as “Tomorrow…” was for LSD, and I think it’s an equally successful evocation and song. The way “Nothing’s gonna change my world” is sung twice, resolving nicely on the D, really does feel like inhale…exhale…Beautiful, one of my top ten, probably. “Across The Universe ” for me.
“The Ballad Of John And Yoko ” or “You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)”?

On a hot summer’s afternoon: Revolver or Abbey Road ? (your answer will influence my next album choice)

That’s very hard, but I’m going to have to go with Abbey Road . Even though I like Revolver better as an album, Abbey Road seems better thematically for a hot summer’s afternoon, mostly because of the medley on the second side, but also just in general. (I have a hard time translating my views/ideas into words, so hopefully this makes some sense).
On a cold winter’s afternoon, Revolver or Abbey Road ?

Revolver . The thought of getting all warm and cozy in bed with freezing weather outside and listening to Here There And Everywhere sounds amazing.
On a road trip: Back In The USSR or Drive My Car ?

Hmm. I’ll have to go with Back In The USSR , it seems more road trippy to me — and I just listened to it on the road recently.
Also on a road trip: Day Tripper or Ticket To Ride ?

Ahh so hard! These are both in my top 10 favorite beatles songs. I guess i’ll go with Ticket To Ride since it has more to do with going on a road trip and Day Tripper is moreso a metaphor about drugs. Let’s be real though i’d be jamming to both of these on a road trip.
How about choosing between an A-side and B-side: Paperback Writer or Rain ?

Rain . While I like the subject matter of Paperback Writer , and its totally badass guitar riff, Rain is like the essence of the 1966 in one track. I really like the guitar playing, which seems to consist of arpeggiated chords, and obviously Ringo’s drumming is great.
Eric Clapton’s guitar contribution to While My Guitar Gently Weeps , or Billy Preston’s playing on the 1969 albums?

Martha, sweet pooch, and she’s in a load of videos and photos just chilling- she also has a song about her! Corky is in a single photo shoot and then vanishes.
Miss O’Dell, typical George song of him describing things that are around him intertwined with his laughter. It’s cute.
John’s granny glasses or Ringo’s glasses?

John’s granny glasses, because I associate them with the ‘it’s only me’ story and also find it funny he bought them despite his dislike of granny music.
Loud, nonsensical rockers from the White Album : Me and My Monkey or Birthday ?

John’s granny glasses– they go with Paul’s granny music. Also, Ringo’s glasses commit the crime of concealing his eyes.
Wanderlust or Winedark Open Sea?
Edit: Ack, too late!
To answer Quarryman’s question: Definitely Monkey. Better bass and just a better sounding song.

Winedark Open Sea because of The Odyssey reference, and because we get @Ahhh Girl’s lovely location from it. (I’m not particularly familiar with either song tbh.)
Lovely tearjerking ballads from Flaming Pie : ‘Calico Skies’ or ‘Little Willow’?

Helter Skelter . A great rocker, I love the story behind it as well (that McCartney read an interview with Roger Daltrey, who said that I Can See For Miles was the ‘dirtiest, hardest rock record’ or words to that effect. McCartney took the interview to John, and Helter Skelter was born.) Just a real shame that it will always be associated with Manson.

Magical Mystery Tour . As much as FotH is a great song (and, apparently, my grandma’s favourite), the brass and the harmony vocals seal it for me for MMT.
These two totally unrelated things: A Hofner violin bass, or Extra Texture ?
