Question: Does the Beatle’s song Because contain any arpeggios?
Answer: Diminished arpeggio with Major 3rd in Beatles song Because

So I did an arrangement of the beautiful Beatles song “Because ” and was surprised at an arpeggio that happens at 58 seconds. The progression goes from D Major to D diminished but over the diminished it does an arpeggio that’s D Ab D F# F. It definitely has a diminished sound tonality wise but I was surprised to see the Major 3rd preceding the minor 3rd. Any idea what sort of function this would be? Thanks for your help

So cool. I mean, the Beatles are just the absolute hippest, are they not? Who knows how they were actually thinking about it, but I suppose it could be justified as sort of substitute for Ab7, which is the V of the chord following the diminished line in question; C# minor. Think not just of a diminished chord, but of the dominant diminished (sometimes called half-whole) scale, which is 1, b2, b3, 3, #4, 5, 6, b7. That scale contains both a b3 and a 3. Also, remember that there really only are 3 diminished scales, so D dom diminished is the same exact scale as Ab dom diminished. In that way of thinking about it, it’s essentially just a cool sounding shape/set of notes from the Ab dominant diminished sound, taking us neatly back to C#min.

Alan Pollack struggled with that chord too: http://www.icce.rug.nl/~soundscapes/DATABASES/AWP/b4.shtml
I agree with SceneIsClean – it’s acting as a WH dim harmonisation from the vii chord of C# minor, or the HW dim of the V7 (same thing). The full scale would contain Bx(C) D Eb F Gb Ab A B (enharmonics dubious obviously).
I.e., from the perspective of the V7 (G#7), the arpeggio is the b5, root, b7 and 13.

I’d say biio of the following chord, but also the Beatles don’t really use functional harmony in the traditional sense, so it might not always provide something useful to analyze it using traditional functional harmonic analysis.

I figure that in this case the F-sharp is a G-flat (though obviously echoing/referencing the F-sharp in the preceding D major chord) acting as a chromatic upper neighbour to the F-natural in the D diminished chord. At least, it’s one view!

This strongly implies D lydian #2 (F# harmonic minor). A diminished scale technically fits vertically but makes much less sense in context.
Harmonic minor is prominent throughout iirc, including a G#7(b9)(b13) from C# harmonic minor shortly afterwards.
