13 Beatles/Beatles-related medical stories/facts

1. Mary McCartney was a midwife

2. Paul was rushed to hospital for a suspected heart attack while recording “Band On The Run ” in Nigeria; he was treated for bronchial spasms (brought on by too many cigarettes) and released.

3. Ringo was taken to University College Hospital after collapsing with tonsillitis and pharyngitis in June 1964.

4. George and Olivia were taken to Royal Berkshire Hospital after an intruder stabbed George at Friar Park.

5. On John Lennon’s 29th birthday, a pregnant Yoko Ono was rushed to King’s College Hospital, London, for an emergency blood transfusion. Medics feared that she may lose her baby, and indeed she did suffer a miscarriage four days later. Lennon remained by her side throughout her stay in hospital. (copypasted from bb)

6. McCartney fell from his moped and chipped a front tooth. He also cut his lip and was left with a scar. “He (the doctor) came round on the spot, took a needle out and, after great difficulty threading it, put it in the first half of the wound. He was shaking a bit, but got it all the way through, and then he said, ‘Oh, the thread’s just come out – I’ll have to do it again!’ No anaesthetic. I was standing there while he rethreaded it and pulled it through again.” (copypasted from bb too)

7. John, Yoko, Julian and Kyoko were taken to Golspie’s Lawson Memorial Hospital after John crashed his white British Leyland Austin Maxi car in Scotland.

8. When “…Linda went into labor and required an emergency cesarean section. Hurried into a waiting room, McCartney, in a green surgical gown, found himself alone, “praying like mad” for his wife and unborn child. Into his racing thoughts came an image of an angel’s wings, striking him with its simple, calming beauty.” (From Man on the Run)

9. The Beatles helped invent the CT Scan

10. John and Yoko went from doctor to doctor for help with Yoko’s inability to conceive after the miscarriages.  One finally told John if he quit drugs and lived a clean life, this might be possible.  It was and Sean was born soon thereafter.  I’m not sure if I have all the facts straight.  Feel free to correct.

11. The doctor in Rocky Raccoon was inspired by the doctor who stitched McCartney’s lip after his moped accident in December 1965.

12. Paul had to postpone concerts in 2014 because he was in hospital with a virus. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-27532798
