I Don’t Want To Spoil The Party a-hard-days-night-george-10 but, @sigh butterfly, how do either of your choices (Shirley Jones’ Till There Was You  and Herb Alpert’s A Taste Of Honey ) fit the category, which is “13 Covers of Beatles songs (group or solo) that you like better than the original”? The Beatles did not record the original of either. Shirley Jones’ version of Till There Was You  even predates The Beatles recording. Surely the category requires songs that The Beatles (group or solo) recorded the original of rather than songs they covered?

This is an almost impossible task! My favourite cover of a Beatles song is ‘Here Comes The Sun ‘ by Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel. I remember buying the single in 1976 and playing it to death. I doubt that it was released in US. I just loved the song … and then I heard The Beatles version about a year later and liked it more!

So can’t add it to the list!

@Teddy Salad, I was thinking other artists versions of Beatle canon tunes. If my song choices are blue-meanie, let me know and I’ll remove them. I’m afraid I’m having the same dilemma as Albo though, so not sure what will happen. a-hard-days-night-paul-7ahdn_john_08_gif

I gotta go along with Mr. Nasty on this one.  I don’t think covers of covers should count.

In any event, I’m sitting this one out.  I can’t think of a cover I really like better than the Beatle original.

Ok, I’m convinced. Just so I can mention my crush Miss Jones again, the Decca audition recordings predate the release of The Music Man movie soundtrack.mccartney-shrug_01_gif

2. We Can Work It Out (Stevie Wonder)

5. With A Little Help From My Friends (Joe Cocker)

6. Tomorrow Never Knows (Junior Parker…well, maybe not better than the original but very cool nevertheless)

I must say I was a bit worried that this topic might not have 13 entries.  I’m willing to allow someone else to start up a new one if the Forum think that we are at a stalemate. Maybe @Tony Japanese, who chimed in with the last entry?

If this was just to list cover versions in general, I’m sure we’d hit 13 in no time. But specifically covers we like better than the original on a forum of Beatle fans is a tall order!

Also for fear of outraging other BBers (“@Random, I’m shocked that you would even suggest that Peter Gabriel could improve on the MASTERPIECE that is Lennon’s Strawberry Fields Forever ” etc)

Maybe we could change to just, covers we enjoy? But obviously changing category is fine too!
