I wouldn’t call Carpool Karaoke an interview, @Ahhh Girl. There’s conversation, but it isn’t an interview.

I think it’s a little tricky to assess because while the karaoke sections of the programme are definitely not an interview, some of the Paul McCartney Carpool Karaoke could be considered to be an interview: “a conversation where questions are asked and answers are given.” For example, there is interview dialogue during the filming in 20 Forthlin Road. Taking the programme as a whole, it’s reasonable to conclude that it’s not an interview.
I’m wondering about the Beatles’ press conferences, such as the one at JFK Airport on 7th February 1964; that’s generally described as being a “press conference”, but is it reasonable to class it as being an interview too?

Press conferences count as interviews, to my mind, because at their mind, it’s question and answer, even if many of the responses were intentionally jokey. The problem I had Carpool Karaoke being suggested as an interview is that it was a day of filming of which the primary purpose was to catch Paul and James Cordon having a singalong while capturing some of the conversation as they did it. There were moments when it veered toward interview, like Forthlin Road, but it always quickly veered back to watching two stars exploring Liverpool and chatting about one’s memories.
I just feel CK is a more informal interaction between chat show host and celebrity, and was one of the reasons why it worked. Sometimes, as in the case of CK, you get more from a social interaction than you would from a straight interview.
But, yes, @Richard, press conferences count so far as I’m concerned, but chat on a day out in Liverpool – however illuminating – doesn’t.
Me, I love CK, I was the one who flagged the extended version on CBS, but I just don’t consider it an interview.
