Q:What did Paul’s father do for a living?
He was a fireman.
He worked mainly in the cotton trade, which ceased during the Second World War. He was a volunteer fireman during the war, while he was working at Napier’s Engineering Works.

I have to admit to checking sources when I saw “fireman” and I thought “cotton trade”, but half-remembered something about “fireman” during the war. That’s how I came up with the wartime bit. That wasn’t on the tip of my tongue.
