As a result of this brief exchange, I thought I’d start a topic for stories about first generation fans that don’t explicitly involve actual encounters. “First generation” includes anyone who was a fan while the band was intact. If it seems too specific and mods think this should be folded into the Fan Encounters thread, that’s cool.
So to start off with, an article mentioning Erika Bale, who saw The Beatles starting as far back as The Cavern days over 200 times. It doesn’t mention direct encounters, though I imagine they happened.

I’ve mentioned before how my mum wanted to see the Beatles at Maple Leaf Gardens in ’64 but my grandma wouldn’t let her make the three-hour drive to Toronto since she’d only recently gotten her license.
Around the same time, she also accidentally stabbed a male friend of hers in the leg with scissors while trying to give him a Beatle haircut!

“How do you stab someone in the leg when giving them a haircut?”
I believe they were fighting over scissors because he was reluctant to get his hair styled! But I could be wrong…next time I talk to my mum I’ll get the details. I haven’t heard the full story in years.
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

^^ I want to point out that the above post is eligible for this year’s Funniest Post Award. Just sayin’.
And, from Sara at Meet the Beatles for Real:
I can’t recall if I have posted this already on this page. I am in the process of writing a book about the Beatles in St. Louis and I am in need of memories of people who saw the Beatles at Busch Stadium in August 21, 1966. I am also in need to memories of people who saw George Harrison in concert in November 1974 at the St. Louis Arena. Please email me if you can help out.

I just joined this forum today.. I was born in 1962 and the Beatles were the first music I remember hearing played at home as my father is a big fan. However, since they were in their heyday while I was too young to really know the history and importance they would come to signify to music, I wonder what someone who is a little older than me would like to share. Specifically, I must have been under a rock while I was growing up, because, I really didn’t even know the rooftop concert existed until a few years ago. Was that as big as it’s come to be at the time it happened? Thank you all in advance for any insight you can share with me.. xoxo 🙂

Way back in (I think) 1962 a friend of mine, who was a student in Birkenhead, phoned me up to tell me about a new group called The Beatles that was causing a stir on Merseyside. He said they were about to make their first appearance on TV. He urged me to watch it, so I did. Needless to say I became a fan and bought a number of their early albums and singles. A couple of days ago, I was poking around in the loft and found five LPs. I’m pretty sure there are some singles up there as well but I couldn’t reach them. When my son comes to visit, I’ll ask him to go up and dig them out. I’m now in my eighties so there’s a limit to how much climbing and rummaging I can do!
Memorabilia – it is well named. Just looking at these old albums takes me back sixty years. It seems like a previous lifetime.

Ooooo, an original!!! @coleoptera42 We love having those who lived during **THE TIME** join us! Were you in Merseyside at the time? Did you ever think in the early days that the Beatles would become a big as they did? Any feel for the excitement at the time that you could share with us would be most appreciated!
Do you have a record player so you can give those albums a spin?

I have to correct the record – it was actually her own leg which she injured, haha poor mum! (may she rest in peace ) And it happened because the haircut was unwanted and there was a struggle…mum’s longtime friend-since-childhood lived across the street, and played guitar in a teen band, and they were gonna play a show in my grandparents’ basement while they were out of town; and since they knew “she loves you”, mom insisted that her friend had to have a Beatle haircut, and she was going to give him one and he didn’t want it. And Von Auntie #2 was a hairdresser, so she had the proper scissors at hand. And there was a struggle…

That’s cool she got to see them @Neely. My Nanna went to see The Beatles in Cardiff with Roy Orbison and Gerry and The Pacemakers on 27th May 1963. She couldn’t hear them due to the screaming, but enjoyed Roy and Gerry and The Pacemakers’ performances.
