Fascinating story at Meet the Beatles for Real of a 13-year-old American girl who ran away from home to meet the Beatles, and George Martin’s role in the story. Her collection of autographs, photos, articles and ticket stub are being sold for $60,000.

Quite something to run away from home and get to meet the Beatles. Its wrong to say good on her considering the heartache she caused her family but its a memory and experience that never fades.

Yeah, it was kind of worth it, but it feels terrible to say. I’m surprised her mother didn’t make “not meeting the Beatles” part of the grounding, because I’m pretty sure my parents would have. But she probably knew she would have just run away again.

The Examiner has an interview with Cindy Coffin, a woman who met all four Beatles, and had several amazing encounters with Paul during the ’70s. She started a blog that’s as much about the friendship she shared with three other fans as it is about meeting the Fabs. I’ve read all the posts she has so far, and she’s an engaging storyteller.
I just had a chance to catch up on this blog. The December update is a sad, sweet tribute to one of the friends in the circle who has passed on, Evy. It turns out Evy is the fan who once had the honor of Paul ripping her own replica “joker jacket” off her back:
From the Paul McCartney biography, Many Years From Now by Barry Miles:
“PAUL: One of my sixties memories is about a fan in the street. I ran up to her and pulled her jacket off and said “That’s my jacket!” because we’d had a burglary and it was like one of mine. But it actually wasn’t mine, there were more in the shop and she’d bought one. She said, “It’s the wrong size, it’s mine.” So “Oh, God , I’m sorry, I’m sorry!” Put her down. And I was talking about it to Neil Aspinall years later and I said, “We jumped out of the taxi and I grabbed her,” and he said “Yeah”….”
Now Paul doesn’t know it, but that’s Evy he’s speaking about. The jacket was the very unique blue and green one that he can be seen wearing in many photos from around 1967 or ’68. Evy’s sister made one for her to look exactly like the jacket Paul had (Evy didn’t buy it in a shop), and he did try to take it off her, as he relates in his story. She wore the jacket a lot in the hopes he would see her in it and start a conversation. She always laughed at how that strategy turned out, with him shaking it off her instead. It was a great story. The jacket also looked amazing against her long red hair, which was just the right shade to complement it. That hair was like her trademark, everyone remembered her because of it.

Yesterday was the 40th anniversary of Fest for Beatles Fans founder Mark Lapidos bumping into John and discussing the fest. Fab Four FAQ 2.0 posted a bit about the story:
Also on April 28: On this day in 1974, Mark Lapidos met John Lennon .
A confirmed Beatlemaniac even before their first Ed Sullivan appearance, this New Jersey native managed to turn his fixation into something bigger than mere fandom. Managing a Sam Goody’s record store by 1974, the notion that a commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the Beatles’ arrival on these shores gradually took hold. Lapidos conceived the idea of a grand convention in a New York City hotel, with guest speakers, film screenings, a flea market, contests and auctions for charity, all in celebration of the Beatles.
But for the enterprise to carry any legitimacy at all, Lapidos reasoned that an official stamp of approval was needed, from Apple if not an actual ex-Beatle. But good fortune smiled upon him; quite by chance, he managed to luck into a face to face meeting with John (and Harry Nilsson) on the same day the two were attending a charitable event in Central Park.
The story of their meeting and the birth of Beatlefest is told in Fab Four FAQ 2.0. But offered here is footage of the March of Dimes Benefit held that very day. — with The Fest For Beatles Fans.

Meet the Beatles for Real has a story about fans speaking on the phone with Paul and John the weekend of the Apple press conference in NY in 1968, which involves a Tiny Tim connection.
It also mentions that Paul invited the fans to a party, but they turned him down since they were Catholic school girls. Can’t imagine anyone turning that down now.

From an Examiner article about Paul getting better:
In another incident, Richard Porter of Beatles in London.com reported toBeatles Examiner Tuesday that McCartney was reportedly seen walking alone in the St. John’s Wood area of London. According to Porter, he had been asked by a fan for directions to Abbey Road Studios. He said the fan then nearly had a heart attack when he realized the person he was asking was Paul McCartney .
“He’s often out and about alone in St John’s Wood. We’ve heard several stories like this in the past,” he explained to Beatles Examiner. “The best was when he was walking to Abbey Road Studios from Cavendish and stopped by the crossing to ask fans there if they wanted help with their pictures. The fans were too involved to realize who it was, and Paul went into the studios laughing his head off.
