I’m not surprised if you have no idea of what EarthBound is, so I’ll just give you a brief overview. It’s a relatively obscure Super Nintendo game (with a cult following) released in 1994, and it’s an RPG filled with pop culture references. Originally called Mother 2, it was only released in Japan and America (renamed for the latter). One of the things referred to most is the Beatles – many developers of the game were big fans, especially the musicians and some localisers.
Anyway, let’s get down to the references.
- This gives you two options – “Yes” and “No”. The correct answer is “Yes”.
- In the Japanese version, some default character names are “John”, “Yoko”, “Paul”, “George” and “Ringo” (the last of which is the dog’s name). A default favourite food is “Honey Pie “.
- The “waking up” music bares a striking resemblance to Good Morning, Good Morning.
- There’s a sample of the drums from the Sgt. Pepper Reprise in the game.
- There’s a reference to Money (That’s What I Want).
In its sequel, Mother 3, there’s a very familiar enemy name… the Gently Weeping Guitar. Its music also bears a resemblance to the final song on Help .
And over the series as a whole, the very title (Mother ) is a reference to a certain John song that managed to make the series’ creator cry.
So yeah, that’s my useless, nerdy knowledge. Feel free to post any video game Beatle references here.

I only played SSBM and SSBB with Ness. What are the core games like?

They’re pretty good from what I’ve seen. You can’t find an English version of Mother 1 without an emulator, though – same with Mother 3. The translation of the first was never properly released, but it’s been uploaded to the internet and you might be able to find it somewhere if you have can find a NES emulator. Mother 3 also needs to be emulated, along with the unofficial (but amazing) translation patch. Mother 3 is probably my favourite game of all time. You can be laughing at one moment and crying at the next.
EarthBound/Mother 2 is available on the Virtual Console for the WiiU (after many years of waiting from fans), so that’s probably your best bet. It doesn’t need any prior context unless you want some unimportant backstory. I personally really love it – it’s just a brilliant blend of humour, absurdism and some nice gameplay.

@MrMoonlight Ah, very clever! I’m certain there are other Beatles references in other video games, but I wouldn’t know because I don’t play video games. I do love the Beatles though!
By hook or by crook, I'll be last in this book.

This is easily one of my favorite games on any console. I’ve been meaning to dust off my SNES and play it again.
One other Beatley reference in the game: There is a section where you are battling a cult trying to paint everything blue. Most likely a reference to the Blue Meanies, considering the other Beatles nods in the game.
I read somewhere that they sampled the Beach Boys on one of the tracks as well.
I’m probably losing gamer nerd points for not having any other Beatles references to add to this discussion from other games, but this game is a bit more obvious with them.
EDIT: But hey, this is a good start… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T…..ideo_games
After skimming that article, I’m kicking myself for not remembering the Final Fantasy X NPC that says that they are “Fixing A Hole where the rain gets in.” My girlfriend just played through that game again recently and I pointed the quote out to her.

So lets give it up for the winner, Earthbound! “An old broken down submarine. The yellow color is purely coincidental.”

I don’t know if any of you have played The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, but I know of a possible Beatles reference in the game: There’s this strange-looking shop owner whose name is Beedle. This may be related to the bug (as seen on his shorts). However, others suggest his name comes from his haircut: a Beatles haircut.
This is him:
Also, somebody made this parody:

I played that and now that I look at it he kinda does look like a tall Ringo
