Sorry if this was posted already, I did a search without any luck!
Anyone here own any of the Dr Ebbetts reference CD’s. These were supposed to be the cats meow until the remasters came out in 2009. Dr Ebbett said himself he couldn’t do any better, so he shut down.
Apparently he used the best LP sources, needle drop method of remixing the LPs and digitizing it, since people complained about the Beatles 1987 CD releases.
I haven’t heard the one I purchased online yet, but sounds funny the thought of listening to a CD that came from an LP instead of the master tapes, as I expect to hear some ticks & pops from the LP source.
Thoughts???

I have mp3s of most of the Ebbetts stuff. You don’t really hear many crackles and pops at all. Any vinyl that has been digitized will still have a bit of that warmer sound you get with records. It’s interesting to hear differences, but in all honesty I prefer the CD’s.

I’ve found a lot of Ebbett’s stuff to have glaring speed/pitch-control inconsistencies. It’s as if he was adjusting it track by track to align with the “official time” indicated on the label (or something?). Most of it sounds like it’s nearly two seconds slow.
You can’t go by the running time on the label because the quality of the electric utility in your town/city is very seldom “clean” voltage. I, for example, discovered I can’t do any of my listening after 10PM through a component-source stereo system because the incoming voltage spikes so highly (the U.S. standard should be 120VAC…but in my area of the East Coast: it climbs to over 130 between 10PM – 3AM) that all my vintage analog playback equipment will run too fast. When I’d make my own mixtape compilations and try recording them in the peace and quiet of the night: I’d go to play them the next day and, the speed would sound “off”…like the pitch was slow (even knowing all my tape decks and turntables were in proper order).
I will play the game Existence to the End ;)
