Could Joe Meek Have Produced the Beatles in 1969?

If Joe Meek had not killed himself and his landlady on February 3, 1967, do you believe he could’ve produced the Beatles’ 1969 Get Back /Let It Be sessions?

Why do I mention Meek? He’s the U.K.’s answer to Phil Spector, the man who actually helped produce the Get Back recordings at the insistance of all Beatles except Paul McCartney .

On the same year Meek died, the Beatles recorded and released “Baby, You’re a Rich Man” which features John Lennon on the Clavioline keyboard, something Meek had featured on the Tornadoes’ 1962 hit “Telstar.” Perhaps “Baby” could have made Meek jealous, had he lived to hear it. However, the Clavioline fell out of popularity by 1970, when there were all these synthesizers (from Moog and A.R.P. and other companies) that could do roughly the same sounds.

Never. They would never have ditched George Martin. Sorry.

Could he have produced it? Most definitely

However, would he have produced it? No: he thought they were awful! He turned them down when they were offered to him as a recording group.

(Actually they did ditch George Martin !)

Interesting point and indeed ..why not!

Meek was very much an innovator and at the forefront of recording technology .. he may well have done a better job than “Magic Alex”! Not sure if he had any connections with EMI though, and he was said to be paranoid about Decca copying his ideas. He also famously passed off the (early) Beatles as “just another bunch of noise, copying other people's music”

When? George Martin was still overseeing all sessions at both Twickenham and Apple studios.

mr. S is right. Sir George was not ditched by the Beatles – just John. George produced the sessions, but Phil was given the tapes by John to re-produce.

If I seem to act unkind, it's only me, it's not my mind that is confusing things.

Ignorance? Nope. No worries cornflake. It's not the first time one of us was “imprecise”.

I meant old as in “longevity”, not as your age. Although I guess it does work the other way as well…
