Hey, I just joined the “Music of the Beatles” course at Coursera. They offer free online university lessons about the Beatles and their Music, and you can join now the first lesson. It’s free, it’s fun and you can still join.
This week’s lesson (complete with homework and a pop quiz!) is about the early days:
Week One: Early days and success in the UK. The Beatles as pop craftsmen. Study of cover versions at Cavern and Hamburg shows, Please Please Me , With the Beatles, and the singles from this period.
So, what are you waiting for, I am looking forward to seeing you in class. More info here: The Music of The Beatles – Free Coursera course

Looks like it could be interesting. I’ve just signed up for the free course (won’t be spending for a certificate). Always interesting to have to think! Downloaded the first lectures. Anybody else going to take a look?

Yeah, I signed up. I won’t pay either. I don’t need a certificate in Beatleology or whatever that gets you.

You know how some devout Christians make a pledge to read through the Holy Bible in a year?.?.
Well, I’ve been thinking I need to read the Beatles Bible (the other black box links besides the forum) from cover to cover, or link to link so to say. I’m thinking that would be a university-level Beatles education.

The Black Bar of Beatles Stuff, you mean.
And I’ve signed up. Seems like it could be cool.
Hey, we should get the people from this course to come here! That’d be cool

What do people think so far? I finished Week 2. The guy’s voice is a little too soporific for my taste, but I’ve been learning a thing or two.

Wow! I just took the quiz for week one after finishing the videos yesterday. I’m finding some things interesting, like looking at the song structures, but some of the mistakes bug me. Astrid and Stuart were not married. When he does the bit about using the UK catalogue, he lists the Magical Mystery Tour ep but not the Long Tall Sally ep. Both were made up of songs not released elsewhere in the UK. There are other details he gets wrong, but I won’t list them all.
I agree, his voice is a bit…
But, hey, I can’t say I’m not enjoying it. Seems I need to get a shift on and download week two!

F**k I just remember I have to do that stupid quiz
(Yes I did sign up, FOMO got the best of me)
I mainly skip through the lectures, can’t be arsed sitting through a 13 minute video when I know the majority of it.

Which is odd because he focuses on Long Tall Sally in Week 2.

Don’t worry, ASJ, it’s only ten multiple choice questions. Not that I would have scored as well as I did without watching the videos. You have until sometime tomorrow I believe!

Watching one of the ‘Before Beatlemania’ videos at the moment and thought that your mans hair is business at the front and party at the back
Edit: Just did the first quiz, 10 out of 10 and I didn’t really watch any of the videos. I just guessed MWAHAHA

I was wondering how easy it would be to skate through it without doing the actual “course work” and then read your post. Well done on the first try.

I just started listening to Week 3. The professor mentions in the introduction that a documentary on the day the Beatles met Elvis is being made, which I managed to miss as it was reported at the Elvis Presley Examiner instead of or in addition to the Beatles one.
Also, for those who might be interested, he’ll be teaching a history of rock n roll course too.
