Our postal service is giving every household 2 postcards that we can send to anywhere in Ireland so people can keep in contact with one another (and so that we all fall back in love with the postal service, I imagine). The tagline of their campaign?Come Together . Write Now.
They arrived today! One has gone to my grandaunt in a nursing home in Dublin (the two worst places you could be in currently, God help her) and the other is going to my Granddad who lives on the other end of town but whom I only get to see for about 10 seconds when I knock on his window and wave at him while I’m on my government sanctioned exercise.
He got a terrible coronavirus joke:
-Social distancing is terrible.
WHO thought this was a good idea.
The bottom card says in Irish:
‘Sending love,
Come together
Write now
#WriteNow’

I was watching a clip of John Mulaney stand-up from HBO that I haven’t seen before and one of his jokes was about how much he zones out, and one of the zoned-out thoughts he shared was “None of the Beatles had mustaches….and then suddenly one day, all of them did. Huh. I don’t think any other group has done that.” I was quite amused
Also, there were two Beatley references while I was watching Frasier yesterday. 1) an episode was titled “Can’t Buy Me Love ” and 2) someone asked an English girl on the show (who’s from Manchester) “Manchester? Isn’t that where the Beatles are from?” “No, you’re thinking of Liverpool, dear.” “Well, who’s from Manchester?” “No one– that’s why I moved to Seattle.”

I was listening to “Band On The Run ” through our living room sound system yesterday while doing dishes and my little sister and I had this conversation:
Lovelysister: “The guy singing this song sounds like the Beatles”
Me: “That’s because he was in the Beatles. This is Paul McCartney with his other band– Wings.”
Lovelysister: “Other band? Aren’t the Beatles enough?”
Me: “This is after they broke up.”
Lovelysister: “Why did they break up?”
Me: “Artistic differences, and emotional tensions, and money issues. They just needed to be apart after so many years of being together.”
Lovelysister: “Why?”
Me: “So that they could grow up and invest more in their personal lives and music.”
Lovelysister: “Why?”
Me:
My step-dad, from the other room: “Don’t listen to her! Yoko broke up the Beatles!”
Lovelysister: “Why?”
My step-dad: “Cuz she’s evil.”

Facts. I try and I try when I get to play my music during family game night and plus the everyday occurrence of me blathering about the Beatles, but he still just wallows in his ignorance…..but at least I can educate my young, impressionable sister
Also, Fiddy, are attempting to speak like a southerner now because of that quiz? Hmmmmmm

This was a couple months ago, but I nanny a one year old and and we like to listen to music together. One of my his* favorite songs to listen to is Jai Jagadish Hare off Shankar Family and Friends. We probably listen to it every time I watch him. So we’re listening to this song when his uncle comes home and he asks me why I’m always playing “weird” music for the baby. So I explained to him how I found the song. It’s off a Ravi Shankar album that was produced by George Harrison and I got the album as part of a box set a couple years ago.
He didn’t know who I was talking about. He had no idea who George Harrison was. It felt really strange to me to say “he was the guitarist in The Beatles.”
*This kid LOVES Ravi Shankar but for some reason does not like The Beatles. I play any Ravi Shankar song and he gets a huge smile on his face and starts dancing, but he has absolutely no reaction to The Beatles (he used to cry whenever I would play their music, though, so I guess this is progress ????)

Have I ever said I want this played at my funeral? I like the irony, and the idea my family/friends would also need to start over without me.

Listening to music on tv and Roxette are on singing ‘Joyride’, a massive hit of the 90’s. Looked up the wiki entry and
Its title was derived from an interview in which Paul McCartney compared writing songs with John Lennon to “a long joyride”.
How cool is that!!
I would love to see just how many songs have been influenced by the Beatles beyond simply listening to the music, there must be hundreds of thousands. It seems they are so deeply buried in the entire framework of music that it’s impossible to look too far without coming up with some link to them.
