It is interesting how many permutations some of these ‘bands’ have/had.Bringing it back to the Beatles; I would have been OK with Klaus and Billy replacing Paul – I don’t know if it was ever actually a possibility given John’s desire to go it alone – but it was a nice 5-minute daydream; I was just listening to the Ringo album a few days ago and the first track reminded me of the gossip back then as it had that lineup.
Can’t agree. Beatles’ strength is that they are John Paul George and Ringo.
I was looking at it from the point of view of Paul already having left; for mine it would have been interesting to hear that line-up in amongst the various solo offerings – but I can see how many would have deemed that sacrilege and most likely John would have had nothing to do with it. Then again the hagiography wasn’t quite as strong back then, but the ‘dream was over’.

Not strictly Beatles news, just an example of how far their voices reached, and how people still reach for their words…
Sometimes it is easy to forget just how worldwide The Beatles, as a group and as individuals, impact really was – as it can often be read as an impact on the developed world. Sometimes though, you find yourself reminded how what they did touched every part of this little planet, and still helps some of the poorest protest.
A couple of weeks ago over 200 schoolgirls in Nigeria were kidnapped by a fundamentalist group opposed to the education of women. Yesterday there was a march on the Nigerian parliament protesting the lack of progress in returning those children to their parents. Some words were changed to fit the circumstance, but they turned to John Lennon for something to sing as they marched…

Not reaaaaally Beatles news, but Peter Blake, the artist best known for the sleeve design for The Beatles’ album Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band, has done something similar for a mural for the Royal Albert Hall. I think it’s very cool.

Details of the 21 July UK Blu-ray release of A Hard Day’s Night have been confirmed by Second Sight.
The Liverpool Echo reports that the blue coat John is seen wearing on the back cover of Life With The Lions has been auctioned online for $31,250.
On the new book front, Anthony Robustelli – for sheer scale – may be attempting a Lewisohn on musical analysis:
While Beatles books continue to flood the market, few focus on specific musical details. Who played what instrument? How did producer George Martin contribute to the group’s sound? Finally, and perhaps most importantly, why do the Beatles’ recordings stand the test of time and still sound distinctive? Musician Anthony Robustelli has undertaken such a project with I Want To Tell You : The Definitive Guide to the Music of the Beatles Volume 1: 1962/1963, a multi-volume series thoroughly analyzing every officially released Beatles song.
If Volume 1 only handles 1962-3…!!!!! A review can be found here – and it looks good.
Not sure if any of these have featured but, hey-ho!
Will x-post Robustelli to New Books.
(A quick thought on the Peter Blake that I will look at properly later, reminds me more of the cover of 1973’s Ringo than Sgt. Pepper .)

Tickets for Paul’s gig at Candlestick Park go on sale Monday. The article suggests it will be the final date of the “Out There” tour.
Twelve unseen photographs of John taken by John Stewart Farmer/Farrier (? – the article gives both as surname) are to go on display at The Proud Gallery on the King’s Road in Chelsea, London. The article describes them as being from “before he hit the big time in The Beatles”, but – from the image included – they appear to be 1965-ish, by which time The Beatles had had a little success.
Universal Music Group, owners of Abbey Road , are proposing a major expansion and upgrade of the studio. The article says:
If it secures approvals, Universal will add two new state-of-the-art studios aimed at new rock, pop and urban artists, as well as a “retro” studio, complete with vintage gear for old-school projects.
